Hey all.,
I've got 5 grand to spend (MAX) on something that can take me camping, and eventually (with a little more money and time) be a good bus to travel with.
So far 60 series seem like the way to go to me, and i've seen a few around the 5G makr that are in decent condition.
Is there anythingto particualrly look out for when buying a 60 series? (Apart from rust in the roof). I'm aiming for under 250000 ks as wel.

I'd expect a lot of 60 for $5k, at least some good accessories with it. Private sales are the go.
I got an unregistered '86 HJ60 with a 5 speed + overdrive and turbo, 450k engine with low oil pressure (but still running fine, I sold it for $700) for $3k. (was advertised for $3600). Would have needed 1000-1500 spent to make it ok, but it would still have a tired donk, and then it had a good turbo, gearbox and steel bar for me. :)
A mate got a registered roadworthy '85 HJ60 with no rust (and fresh paint) and a new stereo for $2800 ($200 off for organizing his own safety cert). Injectors weren't the best but not overly bad at all, not worth replacing, and the steering uni was a bit sloppy, other than that there was not much bad to say about it at all :)
Some things are normally shagged, good for an arguing point on dollars..
* steering uni (small clunking sound), tie rod ends (sloppy steering)
* gearbox noise (gearboxes are expensive) 3rd is almost always toothy, thats ok.
* rust in the bottom front of the rear wheel arches where the panels are joined
* rust around the a pillar
* rust in the back of the roof
* faded tail lights don't go well in safety inspections
* soggy springs ($600+ to reset or $1600+ to replace the lot)
* exhaust gaskets are often shagged
* some types of tow bars inhibit tires larger than 32's to fit under *shrug*
* check the seam along the chassis rails

5K should get you a reasonable 60 if you shop around and you know what to look for. They are getting long in the tooth so if your not mechanically minded then be wary of it needing work. Sagged springs, rust and gear boxes are the main things to watch out for.
Other option is a GQ. You'd pick up an early petrol one for that money no worries. If you want a diesel you'd be hard pressed to find a goodie for 5K though.

If this car was to have no rust. Would it seem like an ok deal? I'm a bit worried abotu the high ks - but the extra bits and pieces are exactly what I would want to add. (The car will be for touring rather than wheeling)

How about an 86 Turbo Diesel, 5 speed, 60 series, ARB winch bar, UHF, relatively new springs, 80 series LSD rear with new rear wheel bearings, front knuckle/wheel bearing kit sitting in a box with new tie rod and drag link ends, 33" cooper muds on 15x8 silver frosted sunraysias, factory central locking, A/C snorkel, rear storage system, sheep skin seat covers, rear wheel carrier and maybe a winch?

Ok you might get lucky but generally it takes some leg work and an eye for a bargain.
I just spent 3 months looking for a 75 series before I found the right one at the right price
I wouldnt buy a car off ebay unless its local and you can inspect it.

I really quite like the one i originally posted, but is buying a 400,000km car a bit silly? It has got a re-co engine though. Cos otherwise all the gear makes is perfect for what I want, and would cost me at least $1000 to get a lot of that stuff added anway.
I haev the cash ready - jsut gotta make sure I have the patience not to buy the first half decent car i see.

If it has a reco engine you really need to asses how good the reco was. If it was a backyarder it may only last 100thousand. If its done properly it should go another 300thousand or more. See if you can get reciepts, go and see the guy that rebuilt it.
A reco engine doesnt mean everything has been reco'd though. Injector pump is often not done in an engine rebuild, and at 400thousand it will be close. (thats about $1k for a full rebuild).
If the brakes and wheelbearings hub seals etc haveent been maintained you will be looking at about $400-500 in parts to do all 4 hubs (seals bearings) and the brakes front and rear. If you pay someone to do the work it would be about another days labour. ($700?)
Rust is a really big concern in 60 series. Look for rust everywhere. Look for small rust spots coming through along the roof. If its done beach work the rear quarters rust through at the bottom near the wheel arch.

you really need to be keen to maintain it, if you have to pay everyone to fix stuff it will bleed you dry.
Things like doorhinges etc will have to be replaced as the door seals dont work properly. (gotta do my drivers door hinges, mines done 400K)

Went and had a look/drive. The guy seemed very passionate about it, and had modified lots of little things to make it good for touring. It drove well too, no whining or anything from the gearbox. The body though was pretty average. Lots of touchup paint everywhere!
While I don't mind a rough looking car, it would make it that much harder to sell down the track and 400,000 is a lot of ks to, so I'm gonna give this one a miss.
I also checked one out at a car yard, but it had been defected, had rust, the LPG was out of date and the guy was asking 6999, down to 4500. Still seeemd waaay to dodgy.
Finally a mate has offered me his 88 Jacakroo for 3000 (he paid 4500 about a year ago) and its in top nick. Will go check it out today, and maybe borrow for the weekend to test. I know its not a 'Cruiser, but for general touring I think it will still be decent.

Had a go in the Jackaroo.
