as i cant tell which connection is the exciter and which is the charge light what damage would i do if i hooked it up opposite

Should be marked with a "L" and a "S"
L being Light (Dash charge light)
S being Sense (From the battery eg +12v)
If you get them around the wrong way you can destroy the regulator.

If i remember rightly if you put a multimeter between Ground (case of the alternator) and one of the terminals, the one with a short (Very low resistance) should be the "L" (Dash light terminal).

the one under it with the rubber insulator under it is the main battery power output terminal the blades are for yr charge light and accessories. lokk behind some other alternators in friends cars.this is an old type.
my other cars an xwgt silver fox custom xr interior go the windsors!
