J10

Post by vpacer »

Hey All,

Im looking at an 83 J10 (cj10 elsewhere i believe). Apart from rust in the usual places for a CJ type body, what else should i be keeping an eye out for?

Ive read that the steering can be funny on these, can anyone elaborate? Ive had a K20 chev before can it be as bad as those?

What is parts availablility for these like (mainly body, already has v8&auto transplant)

What diff ratios would be in this (presuming std)?

Thanks in advance!

The CJ10 are unique to Australia apart from the USA where they were used as aircraft tugs. The CJ 10 and the J10 are quite different but run similar drive train components.
Essentially the CJ10 is a Cherokee with a CJ tub.

Steering is no "funnier" than any other vehicle of this age. Swap in another steering box, referesh/replace the steering components as needed.
If it's had a V8/auto transplant them most likely is a swap out of a Cherokee - maybe a 360 and 737 auto.

Parts are all over and relatively easy to get BUT the square headlight guards are like rockin' horse poo to replace.

Don't presume standard 4.11 gears in the rig if the donk has been swapped. As standard they come with Dana44 and Dana60 with 4.11's. You may be unlucky and find the diffs have been swapped for Cherokee stuff which is Dana44 and AMC20 rear (3.09's) Check this carefully as it's a bummer on 33"s on 3.09's. Will struggle.

Anything bigger than a real skinny tyre on the front and you will be poking out by miles. A 33X10.5 will have a 1/3 of the tyre hanging out which is not kosher....

Have fun.....

Thanks OzJeeper,

Its actually got a Chrysler 360&727, not the AMC, which im pretty stoked about (Chrysler man from way back), i didnt realise that about the guards though, good to know.

I think ill be checking the ratios in the diff too.

The Chrysler/AMC/Rambler 360's were all used in the Cherokee range but AFAIK the Chrysler 360 is NOT genuine to the CJ10 wereas the AMC is. Back to checking the "genuine" of this rig as - again - they never came with the 737 auto either. Again Cherokee....

All the CJ10's were manual boxes... again - AFAIK.

Yeah Ross is on the money, havent seen an origional auto in one of these, stock donks were 258 6cyl or Nissan SD33 (non turbo) T176 trans were I believe the std. I have seen these with AMC 360 V8 and its about the power you need for a 2 tonne(Tare) truck. Also This months Jeep Action mag has a SD33 Turbo transplant.

Thanks Guys,

The 360 & 727 were transplanted in 99 (and plated), and mated to the std 208 t/case, and still has the original diffs & 4.11's. (diffs were actually just overhauled by Hammonds).

I took a look at the guards, and they have already been professionally widened 3" in glass matching original guard lines(reciepts for that too!) covering 285/75 16's.

Im pretty impressed with it, now its gotta go past the leader of the opposition.......with any luck she'll be mine!
