will a 4.2 turbo diesel fit a 2.8 engine bay
will a 4.2 turbo diesel fit a 2.8 engine bay
my 2.8turbo diesel is nearly dead and i am thinking of fitting a 4.2 turbo diesel, will these bolt in, eg same engine mounts etc, i no the gearboxes are diff so i will get another gearbox but will it all bolt in fine
thanks
thanks
60 series cruiser, GU patrol
i got a 2.8 td 99 gu as well & in the process of wanting to change motors over, as im not keen on selling it,
aparently its easier getting a 6.5 chev in than the 4.2, u will have to change over nearly everything there isn't much price difference in the getting either motor either, unless u already have the 4.2 donk already
basicaly nearly everything needs replaced, gear box, clutch to engine mounts. u can get conversion kids from marks4wd & another mob dellows?

we have measured the engine mount locations on the chassis between a factory 99 4.2 turbo, and my old mans 98 2.8 turbo, and they seem to be in the same place according to our measurements, there fore, the engone and gear box will bolt straight in, and should sit straight on the 2.8's rubbers, so all that will need modding after engine and box are in is your wiring, plumbin,
we picked up our wreaked donor rig 4.2 Diesel, with aftermarket turbo, with 200,000ks, for well under 4gs, the engine runs well, starts well, and is smooth, we will get this in for under the purchase cost of a 6.5 litre chev, which range form 7-9g's just for the motor alone,
it all comes back to how much wark your prepared to do on your own

Not sure how most of you measured the fitting a 4.2 in a 2.8 engine bay however we did one in melbourne and the engine mounts done line up they need to be removed and new mounts welded in place.
you will need a new gearbox transfer case is still ok, and will need to do some modifcations with the hoses for radiator as well.

okay, i just found out the details that some may be interested in,
now what i was saying about the spacer on the gear box is actually true, but it was only ever fitted to the ZD30 patrols,
also, enyone looking at an engine conversion from a 2.8 GU to a4.2GU, the gearbox crossmembers are different, where the rubber gearbox mounts bolt to, are actually further back by approx 30-40mm so when doing the gearbox swap its wise to get the crossmember to suit the GU TD42 box,
also, the sifter locations when comparing the GQ TD42 and the GU TD42 there is approx 50mm between them, the GU shifter location is actually 50mm further towards the rear of the gearbox, and also the overall height of the GU box is less than the GQ box,
in saying this Bogged, not sure on the height of the GQ auto, but you may be able to mount it up, depending on the shifter and they height of the auto box,
