What is this hook for

Post by Ezookiel »

This hook is on one side arm of the ARB bullbar on my car. It's so far under I didn't know it was there, and so far under it would also make it hard to use for recoveries if that was it's purpose. It also has some weird sort of plate welded to the tip of the hook which might make getting things on and off of it even harder than the location would cause.

It's attached by 3 very large high tensile bolts, or appears to be.

It's a standard Nissan recovery point.

It's flamin huge if it's a tiedown point, but if it's a standard recovery point, and the bullbar was added later (which it was) then it might explain it's now ridiculous position right up underneath.

So why the plate welded to the end of the hook?

OK, would have been nice if they mounted somewhere you could actually REACH it, but then I'm assuming it was from pre-bullbar days.
Will running a snatch down under the bullbar and up to the hook put too much strain or upward force on the bullbar in a recovery?
Can these things since they are bolted on, be moved somewhere more reachable?

Ive used the Nissan hook many many times withiout a problem on a few GQ's.
You can reach it easily and it is in a good strong part of the frame. If you recover sensibly you will not have any problems.

Im amazed you only "just" saw it. Have you only had the Patrol 1 day??

It's the recovery point. The tie-down point is probably on the other side.

I've never needed to look for a recovery point cause it's a Nissan, it's never needed to be recovered. When I pull out other vehicles I attach their straps inside the towbar hitch.

I supplied a photo :P

LOL

It's on the Driver's Side of the car, on the main support arm of the ARB bar. And it sits up pretty high under there, so unless you are actually trying to locate a tool you dropped down the front of the car that hasn't fallen right through, you might never have known it's there. That's how I found mine, I had to stick my head up under my bar and viola.

recovery point

Post by workmonday »

Im with you dromana, i have a deluxe arb bar and there is no easy way to fit a propper recovery hook. The standard hook on the chassis is a tie down point and it scares me to use it. I took off the overrider on the bar and there is a steel bracket so i might modify that and fit a couple of shackles.

dent

Post by embryo »

the hook is an unrated factory nissan item, and we all know that recovery equipment must be rated.
with out a bull bar they are easily found. i wouldnt use it as a recovery hook as i have a lovely dent in the back of my car from when it broke off a patrol i was recovering. my father in law has seen one first hand go through the back window and hit the drivers head rest, lucky bloke was only left with a bruse.

my 2c, use it, dont use it, not worth the risk if you ask me

Weiner,

Don't know if I'd be real keen on using that hook.

There isn't much metal in the top plate of that bar, and it doesn't look like its been plated, so it may simply rip the bolts out when put under a decent load. :?:

rated?

Mayte, its rated big arse enough to recover any vehicle that teh nissan attempts to recover. If nissan put that hook on D patrol, be SURE thats its rated for vehicle recovery. JUST like the recovery ring on the rear of the chassis that is also not rated.

Its a solid hook. if you want real testiicles then you fab a spacer and mount one opposite aswell. short of bashing the front down on it real real hard, you cant hurt it.

What hooks are you talking about? The standard nissan one is shit. I want to mount some rated ones up high so i dont have to dig a hole in the mud to find the shit nissan one.

On my zook ARB winch bar it has two holes perfectly spaced to fit the bolts off a rated tow hook on the two main up rights just above the main bar section. do they have these on the pootrol bars? As it would be a nice easy spot to get to when you up to your armpits in mud....

those holes on the arb bar are shit, they bend and twist the uprights as well as buckleing the bar. i had them fitted there and after a light recovery they bent approched arb about it and they recond the holes where not even put in by the factory, until i pointed out the bull bar on their demo car also had them. after that they tried to come up with every escuse under the sun as to why they where there in the end he admitted they where for bolting on a hook but it wasn't to be used for recoveries only decoration
