Best Car insurance for 4WD'S with mods?
hi
I'm wanting to turbo my gq patrol TB42 and Suncorp Metway won't insure me becuase it's a turbo and there even having a winge about my extractors.
What a good inurance company so i can go with mods on my car.
I got a quote off Justcars $1593 a year for fully comprehensive for me a 18 Yr old with a turbo'd anchor
I'm after fully comprehnsive by the way..
Cheers
Rick.

Just cars will insure it with mods as long as it's legal and roadworthy.
I am going through this same situation at the moment too: Insurance with mods.
That quote sounds about right for an 18 year old.
cheers, sudso

welcome to the world of modifying cars my friend, if your under 25 anything that isnt stock ask's for $$$$
i'm 24 clean driving record no offence's etc and a stock as a rock pulsar is $500per year, add $400 if i was going to lower it and stick some nice wheel's on it. my patrol 2"+2" +33's exhaust stereo, lockers, and accesorized was a smidge under 1k full comp. not much different for my rangie ute
my fairly modified and engineered datsun 1600 was around the $1500 mark. just gotta suck it.... you want a nice car, its unfortunatly part of the game

I was speaking with them on Wednesday and i told them what is on the car and then say jee you should have updated becuase i'm not sure if your car will be insured anymore..
I get a call back your car is still insured but we can't insure you with a aftermarket turbo on that car...
And then i thought what a load of shit..
Wounder how you get away with all your mods i'm 18 though so not a rating 1..

It's hard enough for us "old farts" to get decent cover with our mods
They say you should have updated but you haven't actually got a turbo yet have you?

i think the problem might lie with the fact you are wanting to turbo a petrol motor and not a diesel........ with what has happened on the roads with all the carnage and accidents over the past couple of years that have involved young drivers under the age of 25 insurance companies have basically upped the anti so to say..... if you have a few mates that drive hotted up 2 wheelers (ricers) ask them who they are insured with and see if one of them might be able to help out....... unfortunately every insurance company will see you as a "hoon" being 18 and all, its just a simple fact of life have you tried shannons? what about gettin it insured under your parents name for a while? best of luck mate

Doesn't help me as there's no club for miles around here that I could be "actively" involved in.

but don't you find it farked up when you see a beat up shitbox 1940 model car with no working lights and no tread on the tyres and blowing more smoke then a Kenworth with stuffed injectors and they have insurance and there the ones that cause these accidents but the people that spend money on there cars to either make it better or more reliable and more maintance spent on it get thrown in a hole..
Doesn't make sense..
Looks like i'll have to fork out a extra $800 a year for insurance... it's werid though they don't think of the power to weight ratio at all..
Cheers
Rick.
If you don't mind if you do post let me know what insurance company ur with so i can see what there quote is thanks alot

I think you will just have to live with it. As you get older and hopefully get your rating up you can "have it all" then.
It's crazy, I have my Rodeo with full comp. they know about the 33's and 3" suspension lift and that was ok.
Then I get this GQ and the 1st question they ask is: " has it been modified in any way"?
I say yes, it has a suspension lift and larger than standard tyres.
She puts me on hold for a minute then comes back and says "sorry we cant insure it"
WTF! I say, and tell her about my rating 1 and Rodeo I have insured with them but she says "my superior just told me that we cant insure the GQ unless it's standard"
I "politely" told her that if this is the case then I will find another insurance company for all our cars
So the phone calls begin tomorrow

NRMA Suncorp and a few other wont insure me cause I have a aftermarket Turbo.
I told them that the 80's come out factory with a turbo but they still refused.
When I did get full insurance I cancelled my other car, bike, home and contents and camper trailer all over to the same company. They asked why I was cancelling all my policy's at once I told them they informed me that they were able to insure my cruiser after all.
Too little too late.
I'm with AAMI for everything now and have never had a problem.

Look at most fucked things you see happening on the road - usually P plates. Not all, but most. racing each other in their skylines, taxi utes etc... Sadly it does make sense as MUSS said.
Most kids thing they are bullet proof and all want high powered cars, which is more important than learning to drive and survive. I've been there, hour 1 of my license, was 160 down the magic mile at engadine. thinking back now standing on the outside looking at young drivers, without doubt they are the biggest risk age group - to themselves and friends.
Probably better driver education would be an answer, cant remember where it was but one country overseas is something like $6k to get your license, where you are taught in all conditions PROPERLY over several months, with some very strict restrictions. not once around the block with gramps a few times a month to get your license.

Very true mate i understand if i'm trying to insure a Skyline running 20 PSI but i'm not ... trying to insure a 2.1T 4WD with a turbo that will make is as powerfull as v6 commo or maybe not even that powerfull..
To be honest when i got my lisence i thought to myself wdf is going on i'm drving down the highway for the first time by myself without any experence nothing doing 110... when i went for my licence the guy took me around the block i mean it's not hard putt around doing 40 and think before you do and you get it.. i found getting my "L'S" harder took me 3 goes
But i do think they should take into consideration that the power to weight ratio isn't to flash hot in one of these tractors
Cheers

with TCIS insurance they do require you to be a member with an afilliated 4wd club.....Mulisha wrote:Thanks alot guys i just found TCIS site and it sounds like they are pretty good...

Hey MUSS how much r u paying per year on ur rig? Ur age as well if you don't mind just to get a rough idea hehe...
mulisha... i have a modified BJ73 landcruiser MWB its a 1986 model... im insured for over 15 grand that full comp + accessories all my modifications a LEGAL and APPROVED my previous insurer insured me for 4 years and i left them with a rating 1 and "no claims" bonus of 70%
im paying between 300 and 450 per year. im now 28 (as of today ) and im in the committee of an afilliated 4wd club
another problem you will be up against is the location of which it was garaged always a major factor with insurance...and if you have an alarm and or imobilizer fitted it can help with lowering your premium too
good luck with TCIS fellas.......

With all the other stuff I've got hanging off the car it's insured for $28K agreed value. And I pay just under $500 per year full comp. Covered anywhere in Aust. as long as I'm not in a Trail or timed event.

Mate,
you just have to deal with it, i know when i was 21 i had a turbo diesel disco and i paid $1500 for it with fuck all mods fully insured.
If something is modded or v8 or turbo or sports and your under 25 be prepared to be reemed for it.
I think for what you got qouted isnt that bad, just go with someone that does pay by the month like racv and i thought that was good, about $120 a month out of my bank accounts easier than doing one lump payment..

What insurance companies do the comp spec vehicles use? Having beadlocked rims (illegal for road use), roll cages etc i couldnt see there insurance policy being cheap.. even if they can be insured:? Interesting to know what insurance companies they use that allows them to be insured with these mods an also being insured while competing.
Try DGA insurance brokers (dgainsurance.com.au).
They cover you for the market value of your vehicle and also the market value of your accessories plus up to $2000 in camping gear. I'm pretty sure they cover you anywhere, not just marked trails as well.
They covered me with a 92 Hilux, 80 series diff and coil conversion. 5 link front and A frame rear and an aftermarket turbo, lockers all round and 4.88 gears. I think all my accessories added up to $32k as I listed everything it has for the conversion and it ended up being around the $750 mark for full comp. Just had to fit an immobiliser but my car is fully engineered as well.
Not sure how you'd go being under 25 though.
They're the brokers for 4wd Insurance Australia which is covered by CGU.
Worth a try.

just cars for you mate
im 24, have had 6 fairly modified cars in the last 5 years and all have been with just cars, them being the only ones who will allow me as many mods as i want.
The good news is that everytime i register a new car with them they are getting cheaper.. goes with getting older i reckon. My 60series cruiser on 36's with 6in lift, and a few other mods was 590 full comp a year (thats the last one i had with them) my first one when i was 19 was a 40 with a 13BT, 6 in lift and 33's, rollcage , 60ser running gear etc and it was like $1500 or so for full comp :(

With all the correspondence I've been through today, one thing is sure, no matter what ins co. will give you insurance with a modded vehicle, your mods must be approved by the relevant authorities, and some also require membership in a club.
I dont know of any ins co. that would ensure a vehicle being driven in any event that involves time trials etc. for obvious reasons. You should still have bodily injury cover if the vehicle is registered but that could be a grey area, I'm not sure. I do know that event holders make you sign an indemnity 1st. so they cant be sued. What insurance companies do the comp spec vehicles use?
