Best Car insurance for 4WD'S with mods?

I have been with TCIS for a few years and never required 4wd club membership.
Even made a claim last year and had no probs there...

with TCIS insurance they do require you to be a member with an afilliated 4wd club.....

mulisha... i have a modified BJ73 landcruiser MWB its a 1986 model... im insured for over 15 grand that full comp + accessories all my modifications a LEGAL and APPROVED my previous insurer insured me for 4 years and i left them with a rating 1 and "no claims" bonus of 70%
im paying between 300 and 450 per year. im now 28 (as of today ) and im in the committee of an afilliated 4wd club

another problem you will be up against is the location of which it was garaged always a major factor with insurance...and if you have an alarm and or imobilizer fitted it can help with lowering your premium too

yeah it might not have been a prerequist a few years ago.... i can assure you it definately is now..... info and requirements are constantly changing within all insurance companies all the time now, unfortunately

actually, depends on who your insurance is going to be with thru TCIS since they are only a broker, or was the story when I did the GU few mths ago

I just sent off a quote application for TCIS. The first question they asked is which 4x4 club do you belong to. In the past TCIS have been pretty tough on mods. Originally they were only underwgitten by CGU? But they apparently have more options now.

The DGA quote was the best by far though - good thing I am the right side of 25

99 3.0D Dual cab Hilux with RACQ, i am 20.

When i bought it, it had bullbar, scrub bars and sidesteps, towbar, spotties, uhf and cd, ute liner, larger wheels and tires.
I was 19, best quote was racq for $1900 cmv.

I copped it and paid it!

Shortly after purchase; 2" lift, snorkel, f+r air lockers, diff breathers, aerial, dual batteries, better spotties.
They smashed me just under $2500.

I copped that!

I recently called them and asked how much i would be looking at if i were to put 6" more lift on top of that, 35's, rollbar, lights and roof bar, and turbo...................

I got, "We are sorry but that will be uninsurable through our company."

Doesn't mean i am not going to do it! I'll just have to find someone else. What you have to weigh up is whether the amount you are going to be paying is worth it. Can you afford 1500 bucks or whatever it is per year, or can you afford 20k now for a new car when some arsehole pisses off with it.
If you are gonna modify it and your young and want it insured, you just have to cop it on the chin mate. I know it sucks but i look at it as being a small price to pay if something does happen.

Check your excess too mate, it might be as much as the whole sum itself.

Another idea might be to just get third party(just in case you hit a rolls) and put the difference into a bank account you can't touch so it's there if you need to fix your own truck. I know of a fella thet runs his own trucking company and doesn't pay a cent in insurance, what the thieves would charge him he puts away, smart fella's built up millions in that account - I guess truck insurance is kind of steep

I'm with Alphera Insurance. They will do modified 4wd as mine has 35" tyres, 3" exhaust etc. Its a GU turbo 4.2 diesel.

Dave, do you live in Ipswich QLD???
If so, you won't find any insurance company that will cover your hilux for 6" of lift and 35's. You cannot run this amount of lift legally in QLD and you cannot increase your tyre size by more than 15mm from standard.
You may find an insurance company that say they may cover you and gladly take your money. But if you have an accident they will not cover you as your vehicle will not be roadworthy in QLD.
I know you see many vehicles in QLD with huge lifts and tyre's but they are running a huge risk - if you killed someone while driving an illegally modified vehicle you could be facing jail time.

And yes, i know that what i am going to do to my vehicle is illegal, i have already checked and know all the rules and measurements. And i am prepared to take that risk.

I will be running 33's on the road (when i do drive it on the road), and i know plenty of insurance companies will take my money, but nobody would cover me. Exactly what you are saying. They love finding ways to wipe their customers like a dirty bum!

I have a daily driver. The lux will be driven regularly but it is not like i am going to go around trying to show it off.

You can only increase the the size by 15mm over standard. So on most vehicles you cannot run 35's legally. QLD is a bitch of a place to live if you want to modify your 4wd legally.

And if the worst ever does happen, hope like hell you have time to drop your lift and swap tyres before the insurance inspector looks at the vehicle.
I have an old VS commodore as a daily driver - bit cheaper on fuel than an 80 series 4.5. Need to look for something cheaper one day soon though! Might put it on gas......

There is also a clause on all policies that the VEHICLE MUST BE KEPT IN ROADWORTHY CONDITION AT ALL TIMES. Since you are obviously aware that the vehicle is not in roadworthy condition, the insurance would never pay.

MULISHA, if all you want a turbo for is to be able to smoke up the tyres to impress the ricer/commodore boys then maybe you should just sell it and get a ricer or a commy.
You said yourself you drive 99% on road (I hope that's changed since) but the idea of someone lighting it up in a 4wd on the streets doesn't appeal to me as us real 4 wheel drivers get a hard enough time as it is doing the right thing out there and the idea of you smoking em up in a 4wd isn't going to do our plight any favours.

A turbo will certainly improve your 4by but get one for the right reasons mate.
Get with some experienced wheelers out there on the tracks and use it for what its made for, maybe you have already.
You'll soon get addicted and realise that "street hooning" is just gonna be one big headache after a while not to mention just plain stupid.

Speed and power isn't everything especially when someone gets hurt by it.
Offroading is way more fun if you ask me and you can have loads of it without the risks that go with hooning on the streets.
I wish the government would encourage kids to do offroading with some training as well, if more kids got hooked on it the streets would be a safer place. (maybe an idea there for repeat hoon offenders)

Yep, I am now with DGA after this thread. The TCIS quote was almost as good though.
