4Runner help

ok guys i have a question for you guys , im not realy new 4x4ing but im about to get a lil more serious and do some mods , I have 1990 4runner yes its only a 22r motor a bit sluggish , but i hav found in low range she has a fair bit of power enough for me . Ok torsion bars can the stock ones be wound up without doing any damage or chances of chewing tyres out . If so how do i do it ? . Ok also i want to put 33's on , i have read in here guys have got away with just a 2inch lift , or 2 inch body lift .... Which one is it body or suspension lift . Im planning on doing both but i wanna get her up high enough the cheapest way to get my new 33's under her . And has any1 fitted front diff lock to there runner themselves , is it hard or ezy ive been told if ya good with ya hands and tools should be no problem only time consuming . My mate Mount dissapointment is starting to challenge my stock suspension

Im probly gunna upset you and a few others.

I do own a 90 model 4runner with a 22r petrol in it. They chew alot of fuel for what you get. My 350 chev in my jag on lpg got better economy than my 22r on gas.

I have problems keeping my 4runner running in one piece even on the black top.

They are nice to drive though, even they are a bit cramped for room.

I now own 2.5 (turbo diesels) mk patrols and am looking to sell the 4runner. There isnt anything actually wrong wit the runner atm, but it just isnt practical anymore. It wont hold speed as soon as it points up a hill, wont tow a decent trailer, is small on trips away, etc.

I have spent more on the 4runner than my 2.5 patrols combined will ever cost me. The diesels use almost as much fuel and have plenty of power.


I better stop there, cause i know plenty of people are waiting to correct me. Its my thoughtsts on the subject, and i would never attempt to push 33's with a 22r motor. i cant imagine the fuel bill either

well ive owned my 4 runner for 3 year now and never had a problem with , my motor isnt as under powered as what you suggesting it mayb . In the future i will upgrade but not now , I have a tandem trailer and i towed it with the runner and it was fine it towing a trailer load of red gum , no power house but i was suprised how the little motor went . i run 31's on it now and i dont notice a difference between them and the stock cheese cutter it had on it , its purely a offroad week end car doesnt get used on the road very often , was out in it the other night bashing around the bush and got 300 k's out of it with 90% of it in low range . I reckon it will be fine offroad with 33's on it

Grantly...... Go the 4runner :)

However 33's will make a BIG differance to your power, but if it is enough for you....... no worries.

You will need the 2inch body and the 2inch suspension for the 33's or 3inch suspension (front torsion wind + ball joint spacers) and a big hammer.

Also, lockers on them make a vast improvement. If you want to go there, remove the centres yourself but you are better off get the lockers fitted to the centres by ARB (or TJM). Even better get higher ratio centres while you are at it to match your 33's.


It is a never ending story..... but all good fun :D

Yeah grantly, seems like your a happy customer with toyota as i once was.

at the end of the day its what your happy with . I was going to upgrade the motor, but i hate driving it so i bought the misses a lwb patrol

I know ther lacking in power , but hey i done my dash now , i would loved to get a 2.8 desiel 4 runner , but i aint gonna be able to sell it for enough to buy the diesel , know 1 wouls swap a petrol for a deisel . Im a mechanic and ive been thnkin of putting extracotrs on it with a 2.5 inch system through it and a 32-36 webber carby , and a mild cam , this would make a differnce thats for sure but i dunno how much . Can i wind the stock torsion bars up ???????????? . And is there any major mods i have to do , to put in 2 inch body lift ?????? Thanks for all the advice you guys have given my so far ...... I need to do this , but i need aleading hand along the way . What brand of suspention lift should i get ???? What will i be up for ????

You just hate it cause you have to have to disconect the trailer to open the wheel carrier to open the tail gate :D :finger:
