Hilux, 4Runner or Surf?
I'm planning on buying one of these either before Christmas or after depending on funds. I want something that'll be able to do trips in and play at the weekend with. I have just sold some hilux diffs which I now regret as I could of used the ratios - oh well I still have a set of new 35" Maxxis Creepy's and Toyota rims which I'm advertising - but now thinking I could use. Although there a bit big for these rigs. I only want to spend about $6000, do you think I'm wasting my time....? My brother is trying to talk me into buying a Patrol as he has one, but I just liike the look of the 90+ Hiluxs.....
Any advise would be great.

You're not just saying that cos your selling your Patrol on here are you?? And a 3L one at that....
I don't mind the Patrols, but the hilux's look better.......
I'm just content on buying a modified 4x4 when the right deal comes along!
No, im not saying that because i'm selling my 3l patrol ( its a mates anyhow)Braaap wrote:Jes,jessie928 wrote:save yourself a headache and get a patrol.

Im saying that because the patrol is a better vehicle than the hilux. Its tougher, its more comfortable, it performs better out of the box, and it will tow heavy loads with ease. It wont roll as easiliy, and i never seen anyone put hilux diffs or transfers under a patrol.
BUT, that doesent stop people owning hiluxes because they like the way they look, or the way they feel. Each to their own.
when buying into a new vehicle however, ( without preconceptions) the patrol woudl be the better investment.
i am on both sides of the fence toyota/nissan, so which way can i be bias?

had both to
ones bullet pruf and the other is a toyota and i iv owned a v6 chev powered hilux and i have a bundy and a patrol give em heaps jes
Owning a relatively built hilux, as well as a GU patrol thats failry stock and knowing a lot of people with GQ's.
My advice is buy a GQ. Most of the hard work is done already, strength wise they're better to start with and they have coils not trailer (oops leaf) springs.
Saying that i do like my Hilux but have spent heaps of $$ and time in getting it where i want.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
he's only got $6000 too people, don't forget!
Go a Gen III hilux and you won't be dissapointed. Leaves are fine if you tweak them. Lux's don't roll like some people think the do and they are very very comfortable inside also. Look a million times better than a pooey too IMO.
They are a terriffic project to start with, and if you get one with solid axle front it is also very cheap to do mods to.
Jessie - my comment was semi-sarcastic mate, chill out. I don't care if you have a million FJ40's, it's not relevant . The bloke wants a hilux / Surf / 4runner. Thats what he's here asking about.

Terriffic project to start with, yes they are if you want to spend a heap of time and money making things stronger and more efficient. Read my comments about GQ's.
Look a million times better. Think you should have said a billion
Yes, Hiluxes are cheap "to start with". depending on what you want to do but you'll probably find out a GQ is cheper in the end.

BUY A HILUX
HONESTLY MATE IF YOU ONLY WANT TO SPEND ABOUT $6000 THEN YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITH A HILUX AS THE SPARES ARE EASIER TO GET HOLD OF AND MOST TIMES ALOT CHEAPER. IFS ARE ALOT OF FUN WITH WHEEL LIFTS AND THEY MAKE YOU A BETTER DRIVER IN THE LONG RUN AS YOU ARE LIMITED IN WHEEL TRAVEL. GOOD HUNTING FOR THE LUX!
this is a strange argument hilux vs pattrol u should be comparing it to a navara wich isn't in the same leeg.
early 4 runners had a live front axel and where basicly a wagon version of the lux so all the same underneeth.
the lux will be easyer to take bush cos less pannles to damage

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I am hearing a lot of pro's and con's for both vehicles. Like the Patrols (petrol) chew the fuel, Hilux's have axle and CV issues when running 35" tires as Patrols don't. The Hilux diesel engines are prone to overheating. The Patrols are getting harder to find at a reasonable price. But the Hilux's are cheaper and there's more to choose from.......
Each and everyone on this forum is going to have a different opinion of each vehicle, so I think I'll do heaps of research on both rigs and save some more money and keep an eye out for either a slightly modified Patrol or Hilux!
Thanks again!!!

Yes there are alot of pros and cons. Patrols i say ride better than a lux, flex better from stock and have that bit of extra weight which most of the time is a good thing. Take tonight for an example we went out for a bit, stock lux and stock patrol and myself patrol did all the stuff easyer than the lux and the only bad thing it probably used a tiny bit more fuel but mine outdrove the patrol with mine running on 31's. So if you want to put heaps of money in to something to have it more modded than most go the lux if you want something to perfom well on a budget go the patrol if i didn't buy mine so modded i think i would have gone with a coil patrol or mavrick but i love my lux and i'm glad i got it my only drama is DOT
plenty of parts on the bench
you c unts need a swift kick upside the head. listen to the question that old mate is asking... it's not a matter of what is better - nissan or pooey, he has $6K, and i know that i'd prefer for that price... a lux. And yes, i've been in pooeys, i'm a navi for a mate with a very very capably pooey, they go hard. but expect to cough up a lot for a good project starter.
i'm fuscking drunkn and you c unts are shit
