8274 questions

Post by bigcam »

for those high mount guru's,
2 questions:

1. what oil/grease, mixture of both do you use in the gearbox, and how much goes in it?

2. the end of the winch housing that doesnt have the motor/gearbox attached seems to just float on the end of the drum, would be secure when mounted but is there a spreader bar or circlip im missing?

thanks guys

I use about 200ml of 130 weight gear oil in the gearbox and the end just floats there you are not missing anything. Lots of people weld tabs on and put spreder bars to strenghten the end up though

It is supposed to use 30 weight motor oil. Normal gear oil is really too thick. I use a low viscosity gear oil.

Ateco-Warn stipulate the 30 weight engine oil and 200ml of it,

but with the gear setup, it prolly doesn't matter, aslong as they get something

Warn used to recommend ATF oil but switched to 30wt non detergent oil. I queried Warn on the change and this is what they replied

"I just found out that we did originally use ATF fluid in the 8274. We
switched to 30wt non-detergent motor oil because it has a thicker
consistency and will stay on the upper gears for a longer period of time.
For owners that only use their winch occasionally, the 30wt will prevent
rust for a longer period of time. If you use your winch on a regular basis
this keeps the gears lubed. Our service guys said that if you have been
using ATF for all this time and the winch is running good, to keep using it."

In the 20 years I have had my 8274 I have always found the Warn tech guys helpful.

this is what we run in our winch , but i also put in about 50ml of oil stabiliser (moreys or something like it)
we have never had a problem with the gears and its the same winch we have used for almost 10 years of comps

thanks heaps guys, both questions answered,

one thing is there a blastic bush-bearing on the slave side of the drum the same as the motor side or just the "thrust bearing" stepped plastic washer. just doesnt seem right with no bearing surface..

There is just the one bearing on the side opposite the gears. It has a lip as you describe. There are some downloadable parts diagrams at

http://www.devon4x4.com/information/dow ... 20Diagrams

which could be of help to you.

They should not leak if the bushings and seals are good. I use a low viscosity gear oil (70W85) and it never has leaked. I regularly drive through mud over the winch and I have never had any contamination.

they are talking about using ATF or 30 weight oil in in them, I recon that if they do, the winch will leak, I advocate using GEAR OIL as you also do

ps the penrite gear oil I use climbs up onto all of the gears and lubes them, I dont think thin oil or ATF will do this
