winch solenoids

Post by GQ Bear »

Scored some solenoids from work and want to run them in my winch. The only problem is that they are 24V and my winch is 12V.

Will these solenoids work with only 12V?

Also, has anyone got a photo or circuit diagram of winch solenoid box so i can work out how to wire them up?

thanks

Solenoids may not have the magnetic "strength" in them to activate reliably at 12 volts, and may drop out under winching load (battery voltage ~10V).

You may find the contacts are a bit underdone to carry the power (Volts x Amps) through them for a 12 volt motor. If you double the volts through the contacts you only need half the amps to produce the same power and it is the amps the needs the metal-metal contact area. So your 24 volt contacts may be too small for the 12 volt current requirements. (if that makes any sense at all...)

I agree with DAMKIA with the 24V soldnoids, I would talk to Berreta about his soldniod packs and that will save you the hassle.
