Metallic Paint Scratches

Hey All,

I have a deep maroon colour metallic paint on the GU Patrol.

Did some tight tracks on the weekend and scratched the bee gezus out of it! I tried a few months ago to use some polish on some other marks and I could see my circle work down the whole side of the car.
So if I was to get rid of the scratches one day (to keep the Mrs happy or when I sell it) how would one do it?

i have the metalic dark green color on my GU Wagon.
i have given up trying to make it look flash again.
i only have to brush past a shrub in my drive way and the scratches start appearing like a spreading disease.

If it's a GU i'm guessing it's insured.

If thats the case go though insurance because it would look like shit if you you tried to paint it the backyard.

Nothing that bad that needs repainting. Only that with the metallic paint even a light scratch is really visable. What i would do for my old D21 Navara Ute. Couldnt see anything

Once I finish my Nissan G60 Project I will use that for heavy offroad and the GU will be the towing rig and shopping trolley and tourer. When I did try and polish it once you could see the polish circles in teh sun, looks horrible. If I have to when I retire it from heavy 4WDriving I may just pay a smash repairer to give it a good buff. However what hand options are available ?????

My car had light scrtchs and swirl marks and i brought some Meguairs Gold..

It's the best shit ever like $40 for a good size bottle but my car looked sooooo good afterwards and i couldn't see a swirl mark or light scatchs anywere.

And the car was like a mirror to look at

you need really light cutters, even just normal polish gets them out most of the time. and i think you will find on dark colors like that you need to use a special fome rubber type buff as the old wollen style leave swirl marks.

Go and get some 1200 grain wet and dry sand paper from super cheap or a hardware store or somewhere and sand the paint. Don't be scared and make sure you have the hose running over the area that you are sanding. Just rub the area until it feels smooth then dry it off and use some polish to make it shine. Use some Meguires swirl remover and then some of thier yellow wax. Make sure you polish the truck in a shaded area or the polish won't work properly and you'll have to wear sunnies once you're finished.

Like someone else said Meguires Gold would be one of the best polishes around if you don't have a buff.

If that fails you could always get a mobile detailer to come around and remove them. Most detailers are usually ex spraypainters or panelbeaters anyway so they know what there doing.

Meguiars Scratch-X is the best scratch remover, not just a polish.

If this can't get it out, nothing short of rubbing it back will.

if you dont have a buff or dont know how use one do it by hand because incorrect use of a buff can burn paint which is unrepairable or leave swirl marks. use a quality product (not ya KITTEN cut&polish), wash car befor hand, a nice soft lint free cloth cut the car first then use a polish, dont push to hard, do it in the shade and take your time few drinks etc.

or pay a detailer upward of a hundred bucks, depending how much you want to spend as to how much he\she details, interior, door jambs, under bonnet, wheels and tyres so on and so forth. get em out once a year or something. if they cant get the scratches out then only a spray painter can

Well on the way home from work today I bought some Meguars SratchX and another Meguars.

Tried both and they both work pretty well. I think the Sratch X was a little better. Took some pics will post up soon.

Feeling better as I know I can srcatch it and when ready polish them out. Don't wish to polish it often only when I sell it or get my G60 up and going as it wil take on 4WD duties

I wouldn't use P1200 wet and dry on any 2K paint as the scratches are to coarse and there is no way you could buff/polish them out by hand (would be difficult enough with a buff and would still look crap)
P2000 would be better but you would still need a buff

yeah you just need a good polish or afew cut/shines then a good polish...
the idea is you use a polish/cut & shine with a high cut (which will leave the swirl marks you are getting) you then use one with slightly less cut, so on and so on untill the swirl marks cant be seen..... if you dont wont to go out and buy a heap of polishes with slightly less cut grades than each other then get a professional out to do it for you (not cheap, and alot of work).... my oppinion is buy that paint on glue stuff that goes over your paint, drys clear and when that scratches just peal it off and reaply

Bought the Gu mainly for towing but the 4WD bug has started to bite again !

Just feela bad taking a $30 truck in the bush to scratch up. I feel better now I know I can clean up my mess. Of to the bush I go !!

Altapac here in Newy also have a clear guard film which protects your paint from stones, scratches etc... peel it off and reapply


Thats why I bought a white 4x4

It can be done but I wouldn't recomend it on factory paintwork unless it's a Audi or Honda or something with good quality clear on it.

2 Pack can be rubbed back with as coarse as P800 but then go over it with p1200 then p2000 before buffing. If I get a run in paint at work thats how I remove it and 99% of the time you would never know when it's finished.
