Hilux Dual Batteries
PPL with lux's where is your second battery mounted ??
there dont seem to be much room under the bonnet for a decent second battery.
Im planning on adding a second batt for winching and was thinking of just mounting it in one of that plastic battery boxes in the tray.

Go to one of the import wreckers and you will be able to get an airbox from a surf that mounts further back up the inner guard and then allows another battery to be installed where the airfilter was.
If you are using the second battery for winching then you want it as close as possible to the winch or you will get too much voltage drop.

I have seen it done this way and it looks so easy to do and also looks factory!!!

thats what i was going to say, i have only seen 2 or 3 imports that dont have the dual batteries. When you are there grab the battery tray and wiring harness aswell.

TECH SCREW GURU
Just completed the installation of a surf air box into 96 hilux diesel. Got an airbox out of 2LTE from the wreckers and a new filter for it from Repco. Its the one that sits up at an angle on top of the mudguard. First, I cleaned engine bay, removed the old one and all pipes, took off inner guard plastic and had a beer.
Needed to trim the hose from my snorkel a bit so it would fit, then mounted the surf air box onto the guard. The body mouldings are the same between the surf and hilux, so positioning the bottom mounts on the guard was no problem - there are small flat spots that it sits on so just drilled them thru, painted around it, used original bolts with nyloc nuts.
For the top mount, I took my drill to the wreckers and got the original mount from the surf body - its spot welded on, so it took a bit to get off while keeping it straight. Resprayed this in matt black. Drilled 3 new holes in the inner guard to mount it in the original position. I noted where it was in the surf, and it fits the same, just above some 10mm holes and beside some spot welds.
Could only drill 3 holes, as lower rear hole was covered by my snorkel inlet surround clamp piece, so loosened it and just clamped the mount as well. Reversed the rubber mounting bush on this top monut to make it sit lower - it seemed to line up better with the snorkel hose and the engine intake.
To connect the air supply to engine, got a inlet hose from an early landcruiser, from the wreckers, the right angle one that goes from the air cleaner to the intake, and used this to mount to the outlet of the surf air box. I had to trim the straight end off to shorten it to fit. The diameters were spot on too. The intake was now running through the right angle, down towards the engine header with a slight curve in it.
On the engine, coming upwards, I used a right angle intake bend off an early 90's Camry to turn straight up. The diameter of this was also correct, 70mm ID on engine side, and 65mm ID on the outlet. To join the landcruiser pipe to the camry pipe requires a 2.5" joining pipe. I cut the end off my old LN106 air box, as it also had the small lip on it at the end, which fitted into the end of the Camry bend.
The problem with this pipe is that it has joining ribs down the sides when its made, which have to be fitted into the landcruiser pipe. I filed them down a bit, and filed out the landcruiser hose to accept it, but in retrospect - its probably easier using a short length of 2.5" exhaust pipe. I went red in the face trying to force it in before filing it out. Gave this pipe a matt black coat too.
After all that, and a few beers, the best part of saturday had passed and it all went together well. It should leave me enough room for a full size N70 battery, now I've just got to wire up the dual battery set-up, might get a automatic solenoid to control it, then winch and fridge. Sorted, expect to the few grand it will cost.
You probably could use a piece of flexible hose to do the same job, but this way it looks factory and its all Toyota! The right angle bends are probably not ideal for airflow, but its a Hilux after all not a race car. Although I did clean all the extra mouldings off the inside of the hoses to ensure maximum air flow.
The diameters are no smaller than original, the smallest used was 2.5" - where as this was the biggest previously on the LN106, so shouldnt affect flow too much.

DAMN why didn't i think to grab them tooNICK wrote:When you are there grab the battery tray and wiring harness aswell.NICK
Done this same thing on mine and it works great. I posted about this last week i think it was and it had pics in too.
The other way is make a bracket where a turbo would normally sit; just in front of the brake master cylinder

airbox
Check out the tiny flat piping yours currently goes through and then see the 3" (i think) piping that the surf one uses. Add a snorkel and you have heaps better breathing abilityFrankenyota wrote:was thinking about fitting a surf airbox on my comm. v6 lux, but was thinking it might restrict air flow?
Mine was $75 from memoryFrankenyota wrote:What are you guys paying for the airbox's?

I just did a search on car sales and had a look at 90 surfs that were listed. Of all the SUrf's that had pictures of their engine bays they all had dual battery setups and the batteries were at the front of engine bay on either side. I've studied the pictures closely and this swapping the Surf air box onto a 2.8d Hilux looks fairly straight forward.
Thanks for the tips fellas. I've been racking my brain for about 3 months on where to put the 2nd battery. I had settled on putting it in the tray but not anymore. I'm off to the wreckers on the weekend.

Where are the pics!!!!!
Need a second battery and so now comes the big decision....
- Under the Hood
- In the tub
- Or in the back of the cab with the fridge
Just looking around to see what the best options are.
I'm not mechanical at all and will need to get someone to do it, so I can either go to my mechanic, pranah or ARB. Depends on which way I go I supose....
Would love to see some pics....

i have full custom airbox on my hilux made out of aluminium. and all associated piping is also 3" aluminium sucks a shit load more air and they can be made to your specs or desires. If anyone is after 1 the place to speak to is TUETON ENGINEERING 7 LEN THOMAS AVE NARRE WARREN (right behind pro comp). the bloke who owns pro comp has this intake system on his comp car also. so you know it must be good if he has it. also any custom work can be done by anthony at tueton. if anyone is interested just pm me and ill pass on his phone number or just drop by his workshop. cheers
