what to do with my rangie?

Post by matt_w »

hi,

i have a 1988 rangie, auto, 33" muddies, lifted, 4.6L on microtech, maxi in the rear, but the speedo has 480'000km's

the problem.... the auto has been the central heating for a while, and recently started showing signs of slipping, what should i do? get the auto rebuilt? or get another out of an '86 rangie and not know how long it will last

if it was me i'd deffinately rebuild it since you have a 4.6lt, bigger tyres etc.
i forget what exactly but can upgrade the box with stronger parts which i'd be doing.

should i be thinking of rebuilding my current ZF with stronger parts? if so, how much would that cost roughly?
or would it be cheaper just to put another ZF box in without knowing its history?

I have seen people on here get quotes anywhere from $2300 - $3500 for a rebuild, 2nd hand if you a low K should be ok but it really is russian roullete with an unknown.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Get it rebuilt properly first time, by someone who knows what they are doing. Allomatics in Thomastown would be worth a call, 94664499. They will build a stronger one and low stall the converter etc for you. I had one of their low stalls in mine and was fantastic if you wanted good engine braking and bottom end etc.
Good price too if you factor in their experience with these boxes and the fact they are a ZF agent and use only genuine hard parts.
I send my customer's boxes to them from Here, as they dyno each one before it leaves, and any questions etc they are happy to help.
