Gas leak sensor?

Post by physh »

Soemwhat idle tech question.

Where can I get a gas leak sensor, and what type is best for being able to detect different gases?

Any ideas how I could install one in an engine bay of a landcruiser?

For when my gas system leaks I can prove it, rather than just smelling it...

Really just a safety and peace-of-mind thing while I do some testing.

You would need a VOC sensor (volatile organic compounds) - like a PID (photo ionisation detector). But you are talking about big $$$ - $2K+ for anything that would work.

The company that supplies me gas (Origin) have also installed sensors around my shop (it's law now apparently) which connect to the phone line to alert them if there's a leak... it's pretty cheap technology apparently.

physh what sort of car is this on ? You know if you don't have catalytic converters the smell you are getting may be just that - the stenching agent.

In earlier non-cat cars smell of small traces of gas out the exhaust and what it really is occurring is that the stenching agent isn't being burnt off.

Just a thought. check the unions with soapy water from time to time, the installer would more than likely used thread lock on all the fittings - I do and they don't leak after that and nearly 60,000Km of driving

Personally I wouldn't bother getting a detector but that is just my thoughts.
