pushing out control arm bushes?

Post by Glennb »

Hi all, I have just found that my rear control arm bushes have shit them selves. Is it possible to push them out using a g clamp? If so how can it be done? Or is their a relatively cheap tool I could buy.
Cheers

You would be doing well to push it out with a G clamp. Just take the arm over to a mechanic and have them press it out and press the new one in while you are there. ;)

What Micka said - Most bushes like that need 10-15 tonnes to push them out!!!

I have also pressed bushes in and out with a vice, but it was a BIG vice - the bar/slide was about 18" long and 4" wide.

I cut the old ones out in my cruiser, VERY carefully,

I wasnt putting rubber ones back in so I didn't need a press to replace them.

pajeros have radius arms at the rear. they CAN be done with a decent vice, but its alot easier and only costs like 40 bucks to have pedders take em out and put new ones in.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

Thanks guys, didnt realize they need so much pressure to get them out. Think I might take the arms off and take them to a mechanic.

On the same topic I had to push some GU ones out recently, the 20 tonne wouldn't do it, had to take it in to work and use the 200 tonne, getting them back in was much easier though, put the new bushes in the freezer for a few hours to help shrink them a fly shit will make installation easier if you have got all the fancy tools.
