i got put off the road by the dot
Not sure if this has been mentioned, being illegal in another state regardless of legalities in the registered state makes a nice 'out' for the insurance company.

I was pulled over with a qld rego in nsw for a missing number platethe cop looked all around the car and said it must be defective but then let me off. i have a 6inch suspension, 2in wheel spacers, 33s and a lot off chopped up and dented body. so ive been told they dont know the rules for the other states so they cant defect you. i see alot more ricers get taken off the road then 4x4s so if you get pulled up you must of been doin somthing wrong or just unlucky

Your suspicions are correct. Whilst the vehicle is in Queensland the
vehicle could be issued with a defect notice by a police officer should
your vehicle be in breach if the Qld Vehicle Standards. The issue of the
defect notice would be at the discretion of the police officer. We suggest
you carry your approved modification documents (a copy) whilst in
Queensland. The modifications area has advised that your alternative is to
acquire a modification approval from a Queensland Modification Engineer.

So let me get this straight! You're allowed a 2" spring & 2" body lift at the same time, but you can't have a straight 4" lift in Queensland even if it's engineered. I thought engineers overuled the RTA or DOT to a certain point, otherwise what's the point in having them! Are there any engineers on this forum that can answer these sticky questions?

No.....Engineers review the mods are both within DOT guidelines and safely fitted. They do not make rules, nor do they have the right to approve modifications the transport department wont allow.
Nothing can overrule your state's department of transport. Not even God/Allah....
i travelled around qld for several months and yes i got pulled up alot but due to the caravan having qld plates and as soon as they saw the that i was rego in nsw they gave me a hard warning and told me to leave there state but that was it never left though
one went all over my 4by and said he could defect me and after spending over 30mins checking everything on my engineers certificate got me for my front number plate was wired on a $60 fine and then said that he didnt have the time for the rest of the defects and drove off
another one had a go at my tyres as they were 37mtrs and was shocked when it was on my engineers report and let me go
i think you are all reading to much into it just go up there and pretend like "what are mod plates" they let you go every time

This interstate thing is a "grey area". I have never heard of an interstates, currently registered visitor's car ever getting defected, unless it was obviously dangerous to the eye or hand. I lived and drove in NSW for 14 years with QLD registered vehicles with a NSW license.
Only once did I get hassled for driving around a traffic jam on the foot path and the cop said if he caught me again, I would be booked for unregistered, Funny, since the car was currently registered.
I just went to QLD on a 2 day round trip to Warwick and changed my license over a few weeks later for free (with a NSW address) and had no worries ever again. (things have changed now and you will need some proof of residence or property ownership).

Just interested to know about the insurance side of the whole issue. Most insurance companies will insure a 3" lift and 33's and most mechanics will write out a roadworthy for that same vehicle. The way I have thought of it is as long as insurance nows about the modifications and they are happy to list that on your policy you are covered by them. As long as you are covered in case of an accident is the main thing.
I can't beleive that they will pull over a fourby for tyres but someone can drive past them in a L J or L C torana with a 350 chev and a mod plate and its all good. What a croc...

also, i dunno how you can tell a LJ toirana has a 350 in it as it drives past. Could just be a 253 for all the cops know.
