Steering dampener on the 80 series is shagged.
What is the best way to go. just the basic shock type or the RTC type?
Runing 35's and a 4inch lift
Realy wanting to hear from as many poeple as i can who have gone from a standard style to RTC type and what they thought.

I put an RTC on my runner. At the time 33" muds but now has 35" MTR's. It was a different truck to drive. It took all the shimmy ect out of the steering at highway speeds and is no where near as tiring. I got mine from 4WD1 and the price and service was first class. Ordered it in the morning and was sitting on my doorstep the next day. It was only $35 more to go RTC so i thought id give it a try , and i think it was the best money i have spent. It was only $165 and delivery is included.

I have a Tough dog on my Zook. I dont think it is any better than the 15 year old factory one it replaced. But it does have bling value.

go the RTC there much better then the gas/oil one's + you will need it with the 35s tough dog one's are good

I put a Toughdog RTC on and it made no difference. I put a BIG RTC damper on and it fixed the problem for a month, then it started to fade and the problem came back. I now run a heavyduty damper and haven't had a problem for over a year. The problem is the spring can exaggerate any steering shimmy you get.

Return to centre steering dampers are a piece of sh1t. But if you would like to buy a cheap one, let me know as I still have both in my garage and both have less than 6 weeks of use!

My advice is to get a heavy duty truck damper or a TJM one. They do a better job.

Well I don't have any shimmys or shakes but it does tend to rail road a little, not bad.
Keep the experiences comming.

If you fix your caster it will stop tracking. The right caster angle will also bring your wheels back to centre much better than a small spring on the damper.

Have custom drop boxes and perfect castor. Has been checked by an alignment specalist.
I am not looking to fix a problem with the cars drivability by using a RTC damper, it drives quite good.

Bought a Tough Dog unit. It lasted six months before needing replacement. Gone back to Bilstein.

It's not the dampener, but I went Bilsteins for the shocks on my Patrol after a very favourable review in a magazine about them.
It's probably saved my life. The vehicle was plain deadly, would lose it's tail end at the drop of a hat, and was so fidgetty on dirt road at even moderate speed, that it scared the hell outta me.
The Bilsteins have turned her into a new car. They have made a mindblowingly astounding difference.
If their steering dampeners are even a fraction as good, then they'll be worth every cent of it.

I've heard RTC dampers can put pre-load on your steering boxes and flog them out prematurely

and if you don't set it up right, it'll pull left/right in a big way

sorry no personal experience, but have read that the rtc dampners can put too much strain on the crappy 80 series power steering pump (might have been the steering box?). my power steering pump on the 80 is always leaking, i'd suggest, and will get when current dampner is stuffed, a normal but decent quality dampner

i put an old man emu steering dampener on my GQ its great made a huge difference to the shagged factory bike pump it cost me $120 and is great so far

I put one on my GU patrol. The outside of the front left tyre started chewing out/wearing unevenly very quickly. I think I put it down mostly to the spring being installed slightly incorrectly. Maybe offset a bit to try and fight some of the patrol left pull?

I've since taken it off. No more uneven wear. Might try putting it back on correctly one day...
