I have a 3 L engine with Turbo, the problem is that a "metallic" ticking sound occures at about 1700 to 2000 rpm. there a no sounds at idle or when the engine is cold. The sound is easiest to hear from the underside of the car......
Have the same sound now and then, have done everything except get the surfaces of the turbo and dump pipe machined to rule out exhaust leak as that is what it sounded like. Took it for a 4 hour highway trip and haven't heard it since, that was about 3 weeks ago now.
Maybe just needs to get to a good running temp for a while
I had a weird noise on mine at the same revs,it ended up being the bolt had rattled loose on the steel heater hose pipes and the vibration at certain revs made a noise.
The engine has done about 30000km after rebuilt, but it has beeen standing still for about a year before i bought it. I changede the oil before i started it up the first time, and then again after a day. I was wondereing if could be a valve problem.I am going to give it a good run this afternoon, and then pop the lid and check the valves.
