80 & 100 series turbo

Post by dar_sbb »

Hi guys

I was doing a bit of searching and wanted to just make sure:

do both the 80 series and 100 series landcruisers run a ct26 turbo?

and if so, is it the same twin scroll ct26 on the st185 gt4 and mr2 turbo?

thanks

they are all CT26, but all CT26 are not created equal. there are 2 (possibly 3) different spec turbos for 80 series alone, and the 100 is different again, and they are all different to MR2 etc. all "CT26" tells you is the housing and flange sizes, the turbines and compressors are all variable. even better, Toyota does not publish any turbo data (mostly because, let's be honest, toyota turbo's aren't real good to start with) so unless you have one of each to sit next to each other and measure everything, there's no way to know.

I'm sure that doesn't help ;)

cheers

Ok, here is some xtra info.....the mr2 and celika use a ct26 with different exhaust flange (more like a t3) and they run split pulse turbine housing, a different bolt pattern dump pipe (1 extra stud) and twin waistgate valves (1 per side of the split pulse) The very latest of which has a ceramic turbine.
The older ct26's had a few different compresser and turbine wheel combos also, depending on whether it was for a diesel or a 3 litre supra.

i think useing a turbo off a 4.2 litre motor on a 2.4 litre motor is pushing **** uphill a little bit.

why not something off a 2.5-2.8 litre motr. holden/izuzu, mitsi, nissian etc should have something decent size. will need an adaptor to fit as would a ct26.

toyota does not publish turbo data. nobody knows for sure.

find one of the lower powered ones, like off a 1HD-T (around 125kW) and it might be ok. If you get something off an MR2 or supra you might find that it takes forerver to spool and by that time your engine is redlined.

for what a decent CT26 is going to cost you, I'd start looking at engine swaps.

toyota turbos have they own flanges... thats y i wanted to go for a ct26 cause im pretty sure they have the same flange... just different oil and water lines.

i will look around for prices and quality and see...

i know roughly to get my standard ct20 rebuilt and hi flowed it goin to be $600+... so if its anything around that price i will rebuild my ct20.

Im thinking it would be the same concept as putting a bigger huffer onto a turbo charged 4cyl... low end will be weaker... but mid to top end range will be better... as a ct26 isnt big enough to suck small children in.

would like to here opinions as i have heard of a few people that want to do it but havent got around to doin it.

Mate, there is a turbo on ebay look under Toyota turbo to find it...it looks like a ct20....the supra twin turbo uses ct20's, as does the diesel turbos....
What you have to remember is whatever you use, needs to be in good condition OR you may be looking at a motor rebuild when it lets go....there is plenty of crap out there that has been overheated or boosted till it shits itself b4 a bigger turbo is fitted, then its....replaced with bigger....unless you know the history or believe whose selling it, beware... $600 is chicken feed for a rebuilt guaranteed jobby.

$600 was a guesstimate... but i know of a few places that rebuild them. (went through this with my other car... nissan 200sx... which was $800 just for rebuild)

i think the biggest issue will be checking the seals... there are what is currently gone in my turbo.... shaft play can be checked.

i will try and avoid ebay... but will keep my options open.

The supra twin turbo (2JZ) uses 2 x CT12B turbos, not ct20's
My motney is on an engine swap if ur budget can stretch that far

Not all stuff on ebay is bad, you just have to be in a position to check it yourself b4 paying...a turbo from a prado 3 litre would be a ct20 that what you have now, as Brian said, a ct26 from a 1hdt would be slightly bigger....but the question is...what do u want to achieve....for instance, the ct26 from the 2 litre mr2 might be the best option for more power, as they had ceramic turbine and small housing to get quick spool, then double waistgates to allow better exit flow/less backpressure....when on full boost...most diesels have a narrow rev band, say 2000-3000, so the mr2 turbo is going to give you more at 4k, where you never go...you need more at 2k and below....id also say at 2500 your turbo is on the gate, so if you can enlarge your gate size, you wil get more from there to 3k...a bigger front wheel will give you more to 3k aswell....but also more lag down low.....you cant really do much for a diesel turbowise....better gains would be made from an intercooler and more boost.

would the ct20's of the prados be different to the ct20's in the surfs? different variations?

like andrew said, i want more mid range oomph from the diesel... so the ct26 on the landcruiser would still probably be the best option...

what do i want to achieve... the 1 million dollar question
well i want more drivable power... as anyone knows... the surfs are snails... and thats an understatement, and being a turbo junkie... i cant put a standard unit back on... it will be a waste in my eyes.

so:
1. More power
2. more mid range for novice to intermediate 4wding
3. cant think of anything else so far....

CT20 off a 2.4 surf is probably the same as a CT20 off a 2.4 prado. I thought the 3.0 has a CT26? could be wrong. basically if the engine is different, the turbo will be different.

be careful about putting a CT26 off a 80 series on there. a 1HD-T starts boosting at about 1200rpm and makes about 8psi by about 1800rpm. a little bit of maths says 4.2 litres times 1200rpm, divided by 2.4 litres = 2100rpm before you see ANY boost - all other things being equal. of course all things are not equal - the 2.4 is indirect injection, only 4 cylinder etc, these things could make it better or worse.

If you can get your CT20 high flowed for $600, go for it. $1000+ is usually the bottom line for that sort of work. If you're into experimenting, grab a couple of turbos off ebay and get booty. The turbo you want is one off a similar sized engine (+/- 20%), that makes similar power (or slightly more) than your target power.

i will also be adding a turbo back exhaust system... so that should help spool time...

i will make a few calls and see how readily the turbos are and what price/condition

from what i've seen on toyotasurf forum they have different flanges hence adaptors are used.

unless your running really big boost i would just hiflow it. might be better than having an unkown condition turbo.

also those motors are slugs off the line i would not want to make it any worse.

i did a search on the surf forums... they say... but i cant confirm... that the flanges are the same as the t25, t28 as on the silvia's (200sx's)

now... t25's pretty much grow on trees... so i will see if i can get a flange diagram

how much does it cost to get a flange made up?

ok guys... i think i have found my solution...

they is a guy that sells brand new turbos (t25 style) with 12month warranty. I can get it for roughly $400. Now if the exhaust manifold flange isnt the same... i can get one made up right? and as im putting an exhaust on... the dump pipe will be sweet. i only have to really worry about the oil and water lines correct?

the 1KZTE Hilux's have a CT12B turbo, so im taking an educated guess and saying that the Prado 1KZ has the same turbo. The reason they make more poweris cos they have i/c, run higher boost and different ECU.

Yes, you can get a manifold adapter made. The oil amd water lines shouldnt be too hard, you can make ur own from braided line or rubber hose, depending on how ghetto you wanna get with it :D

the turbo is sweet... it will bolt straight to the manifold... only a dump pipe will need to be made up and the lines.

$400 for a new turbo sounds like chinese crap and will probably detonate the compressor wheel at 1 month out of waranty taking your engine with it.

I would be going to places that rebuild and sell turbo's and ask them for advice. let them think your going to buy the turbo off them.

These turbos have been installed a many drift cars and have seen competition use... Renowned tuner Dr. Drift also sells these at his shop... so im goin to go for... will let u guys know how it goes... cause for bang for buck it is impressive.

are t28's bigger than the ct20/26's?
