1HZ Engine Head work & Cams

Post by Toy80Diesel »

Just wondering if anyone has modified the head and/or cam on a 1HZ to get more power, leaving it NA of course. Such as porting it and installing a performance camshaft. Engine place has suggested cleaning the ports up for more efficient flow and installing a better cam. Curious about any power increases people have achieved and what sort of money they have spent on which parts in order to get it.

Not looking at making it into a rocket, just a bit more power would be great, and making the engine breath easier must be of some benefit.

Fitting a turbo will be more cost effective and yeild better results.

Like most Jap castings, I don't think you'll get much benefit from porting as they are pretty good.

A change of camshaft profile if you could get it done may help. Not sure if you could get any more lift before the valve kisses the piston?

If they are anything like my hilux ports, then porting would HAVE to have an effect- the ports on a 3L are so bloody rough they make the casting on the intake manifold look mirror finish!

I left my number with this guy from the engine place, he is going to get back to me with hopefully some specs on what i could expect. But I don't have high hopes as he was very against turbos in general. He mentioned porting would help but not polishing.

a tidy up of the ports wouldn't hurt but don't think there is a lot to gain. generally speaking there is not much you can do on such a rev limited engines like diesels.

unlike carby petrols polishing well help. there is no need for it to be rough.
