head/ head gasket

Post by viperguy »

im 99% sure i cracked a head or blown a head gasket boxing day. used 2 bottles of chemi weld and i think i have patched it up but will be booking it in for head work on the 8th. ive read that guys have done things to improve coolant flow to back of heads and other things. what are these things? is it a good time to get some head work done at the same time maybe a slight port and polish or better valve gear? the tb 42s need this? im thinking of turboing if not at this time in near future so i would to get all neccessary head work done at once. thinking bout a whole motor freshen up actually...maybe even some performance work plus turbo... what do u guys think? would luv to hear from jessie928 in particular becuase he seems to know his tb42's...

I would want to be very sure. I was pretty sure I'd blown my head gasket and it was in fact perfectly okay. So check it over BEFORE the head comes off.

I think there's been so much talk about how easy it is to crack TB42 heads and/or blow head gaskets that people think they've done so and rip into the engine prematurely.

Just a thought.

been adding up to a litre of water to radiator regularly.. ruff as guts running on start up, more than condensation quantities of water out of tail pipe on start up, getting hot if i dont top up water, lotsa bubbles in filler neck of rediator, radiator water reaked of exhaust smell.. the only thing that didnt make me think head/geasket was no water in oil or oil in water. had my fingers crossed for a couple months. wasnt til boxing day that it all showed definate signs. oh also i have 330k on the clock. will definately do all neccessary diagnostics before a spanner is weilded in anger..

my old TB42 had a head gasket go on it as well.

Never any water in the oil. The gasket let go on number6 water jacket between the jacket and the cylender pushing exaust straight into the radiator......
the jacket was soo badly corroded it wasnt funny. when i took the head off i had it taken in the x ray and warp testing and they ended up re welding up all of the water jackets and re drilling them out and machining flat and they replaced the back 2 exaust valves as well as they were cracked.... i think it only cost be about $700 for all the work on the head as i bought the head gasket and removed and fitted head on to the motor etc myself....

chemiweld is semi permanant..... you could use that stuff and find that it lasts a year without any more problems...... butit very much depends on how bad your leak is as to how long it lasts..... but it will last a while and the car is ok to drive on it....
ive known ppl to use it once and have it in there for the life of the car....
