80s starter problems ????

Post by guzzla »

'96 mod 80s petrol cruiser.

lately when i start the old girl it makes a kind of grinding noise which goes away when the engine is running. appears to only occur while the starter is working (like a stone is getting mashed between the cogs) and occasionally the "check engine light" appears on the dash for a few seconds when it wont start the first time. the engine runs fine when started mostly fist go, always by the second.

I had the starter rebuilt about 6months ago while it was working fine to pre empt and dramas that may occur when i need it most.

because of this and time constraints i have not yet removed it for inspection as while the noise is only apparent while the motor is cranking im interested in hearing what you guys have to say....

thanks in advance.

regards,
nathan

you could always check and clean the connections to the starter and solinoid and also check the bolts are up tight

failing that it sounds like the solinoid is sticking abit or the starter cog isnt throwing out properly
