How much work to put a roller bearings turbo on the GU?
How much work to put a roller bearings turbo on the GU?
Have been looking at putting a roller bearing turbo on my ute.The Garrett GT28RS Disco Potato.
Will it bolt straight on?

Has anyone put one of these on a GU and what were the results?
Cheers

Re: How much work to put a roller bearings turbo on the GU?
Im thinking the same at moment, but theres another thread here where someone bought one off THE BAY and its not a genuine Garrett... not sure of the seller, but it was only in the last 2-3 weeks. have a search.
speak with Dieseltek in lilydale Vic, (hes on this board) and you will get an idea, but it aint cheap.

Yeah when i first started looking at this turbo i saw some on ebay that were much cheaper.Someone here pointed out that they were not the real deal.
I think the one on the link would be alright. It has a bit down the bottom warning of fakes.I guess anyone could put that in their add though.
So is it not just a job of bolting it on myself?

Hey, for roller minium you would need would be manifold and turbo and new turbo lines and pickups.Buckshot wrote:ok so I'd need a new exhaust manifold and the turbo. What else is involved?Would the pump need to be tuned?
Pump doesnt need to be done if you have anything 03 and above you already have the larger pump.
I wouldnt bother with the disco potate to small, and secondly wouldnt buy a garrett copy.
I'm in the process of getting mine done just getting warranty on my gearbox first.
What i'm getting is the following,
Custom extractor manifold.
Customer BB turbo (Aus4wd Racing spec turbo)
Intercooler either front mount or a 6 x 8 water air PWR unit leaning towards more the water to air setup.
4" Stainless Snorkle
Large Air box (possibly truck one or 8" donaldson)
This should be done in the next few weeks was hoping before australia day weekend but i need my 4by at the moment so i cant have it off the road will be done asap.

Im lost, isnt the potato the GT28? but you say yes in one and no in the other thread? just tryin to figure it out.weeman wrote:its to big it wont come in to about 2500 rpm on a dieselBig Red Toy wrote:the xr6 turbo would be nice but at $1800 might just fix mine :(
need to have something more like gt28 the a t28 flange bigger inlet small exhause to have more power to spool up with
whats the conversion worth for wat your doin without IC
Ok disco potato part number is GT28RS there are many GT28 turbos hybrids so to speak however there are some standard style of GT28 that garrent produce.bogged wrote:weeman wrote:I wouldnt bother with the disco potate to small, and secondly wouldnt buy a garrett copy..Im lost, isnt the potato the GT28? but you say yes in one and no in the other thread? just tryin to figure it out.weeman wrote:its to big it wont come in to about 2500 rpm on a dieselBig Red Toy wrote:the xr6 turbo would be nice but at $1800 might just fix mine :(

have a read here on garret site about gt series turbos
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobyga ... asics.html
The style of turbo that I would be getting will be based on GT28 however different internals. ( Which I believe is secret to good setup turbo )
Intercooler not sure, water to air isnt that cheap.
Front mount is an option however trying not to restrict to much air flow.
costs difference to me will be around $500 extra for water to air
Once this is done I will do a full write and hopefully will be publised in dirt comp magazine.
As well as make a turbo upgrade kit for the GU/GQ with Sandy Aus4wd racing as he will be doing the majority of the work.

Garrett "disco potato" turbos fit on a Factory nissan turbo manifold with a adaptor plate, custom dump pipe, new oil and water lines and some cutom pipe work. They are probably the best matched off the shelf turbo for this engine. They work really well without having to do internal pump hot-ups, spool up really fast and are tough as. The worst thing about fitting these to a standard nissan turbo manifold is they sit back close to the firewall and you have to be arty when making the dump pipe.
