AIR LOCKER FRONT OR BACK

Post by lewy »

G,day I have an 80 series 1hz with a 4 inch lift and only have the cash for 1 air locker. Just wondering if anyone out there has locked front or rear in their 80 and can let me know which is better.

just fitted a rear locker to my 80 and cant believe the difference on hill climbs. the rear is where all the weight is on hills so thats where the tractions needed. cant speak for other driving conditions (mud, sand etc ) yet but for hills definatly the rear.

definutely rear. front doesn't have anywhere near as much load going up hills etc. therefore the rear needs the grip. just my opinion

Put the airlocker in the front & when you have another $500, put a lockrite in the rear. Great combination!

In the rear 1st - you will use it more in the rear - ask anyone that has both, they use their rear far more often than the front. The only advantage in putting one in the front of the 80 series 1st is that it strengthens up the 8â€

A lock Right solid locker in the rear will cost about A$400 including postage from the US if you get it from Rocky Road Outfitters, you'll find them on the US E-bay site. Great guys to deal with.

Then put the air locker in the front.

If you're a member of the LCOOL AUS list there's three videos in the "files" folder (from memory). They are of a Patrol that has independent air lockers at both ends. The first video show the truck assending a steep grade with open diffs. It get's about 3/4 of the way up and spins a wheel. The second video is of the same truck with the rear locked climbing the same hill, again it looses traction on the rear wheels at the same point as it did with open diffs. The final video is with only the front diff locked, the truck climbs the hill like it wasn't there.

Here's another way of thinking about it. If you had to lug a wheel barrow full of bricks up a hill or up a step, you could get a run up at it and potentially loose your load or you could turn arround and drag it up in a controlled manner.

Hope some of that helps. I think some other furums may also have the videos.

Here's the LCOOL Link for those that are members.

go the back recently broke rear diff mid track.
Had to drive out on front only with locker in slightest little loose hill got nowhere.
if it was the other way round even with out locker in the rear it would be easy
go the rear first you wont regret it
my 2 cents
