Alternator stuffed ?

I went 4wd the other day and spent some time in the water.. muddy water.. now some dash lights stay on.. CHARGE, T-Belt, and Filter. 2 days has gone past and now my battery is flat. I have had a general look and no fuses blown and no wires loose etc.

I am assuming it is my alternator, but could it be anything else simple, or cheaper ? Anything I can do to the alternator?.. dry, spray with crc etc ?

If it turns out to be alternator, where in Brisbane can I get it fixed for cheap, or buy a new one?

what sorta car ?
it is likely you have got mud under the brushes
it may cleanout with a realy good drowning with the hose while the engine is running

i would pull it apart and clean it out it is probly just the bushes stuck in the alt they are spring loaded and should move freely
it is worth a shot as it may save you some cash

sorry, it is a hilux.. 88 dual cab diesel... It looks like a real b*#ch to get out though.. uh well

So hose with car going?... with water... or flood with crc... ?... if no luck then try taking it out and pulling it apart ?

Plz guys help.. should I try hitting with hise while engine running, and if that doesnt help, soak with crc ?... then maybe try pulling it apart ?

I aint ever pulled an alternator apart.. anything I should know ? Can I buy new brushes and bearings and fit them myself ?... cheers.

Yes, squirt hose in with it running. Clean water wont short anything out.

Unfortunately the mud (You learn your lessons this way) may of damaged the bearing seals too so they will eventually go.

WD 40 will help dry out the water you wash it with. Stop engine before spraying that in.

Start it up again and tap case of alt with the handle end of a hammer to dislodge brushes if stuck. If the above doesnt work it will need dismatling.
Easy job if you know how...

cheap mulitmeter from super cheap about 10 bucks got one to check my alternator 2 months ago still in the cuboard for next time i need it

get a jack handle and give it a bash if you can reach it (not to hard)
try and do it while the motor is running and do it when the mud is dry

if that dont work drown it with hi pressure hose

if that dont work rip it out clean it up

if that dont work get the yellow pages and find an alternator at the wreackers

i have the same problem i picked up a alternator from the wreackers for $150 complete with oil pump etc (sd33)

and maybe steer away from mud holes i love them alot but i would rather save myself money

Yer it is a hard one. I just love the mud, and so does the misses. Maybe after each mud wrestle I can spray the alternator as well as the car.
