Changing into 4wd while rolling in a Vitara

Post by jeremyisme »

Hi,

I read the little instructions beside my transfer case stick a while back and it said you can change from 2wd to 4wd while rolling if the front wheel are straight.

Well, I have tried it with varying degrees of success. Sometimes it goes in straight away, no probs, no grinding etc, at about 25km/hr, other times it grinds etc and makes nasty noises, often when I am going a bit faster. The last time I heard one of the hubs engage, and make a bad noise (auto hubs), but it didnt go to 4wd, so I stopped and got it into 4wd.

Should I stop doing it? Or is there something wrong with mine that it won't work always?

No question about it, it's better on your transfercase is you stop to engage

I reckon rolling may mean less than 5km/h

My dad's subaru wagon would only go into 4wd if you were rolling. But by rolling I mean barely moving

Not sure on the vits, but in the sierra i have changed from 2 to 4 hi at about 80kmh before, no grinding or anything.

Must be on loose surface (gravel, sand etc) and generally wheels straight.

dont do it with auto hube it needs the axles to be turning for them to lock in
rear drive doing 35ks front doing 0ks engage transrfer leaver will cause majour probs

what mine did from a faulty hub unlocking under load -not done from engaging 4x4 but same princibles-
NEVER engage 4x4 on AUTO HUBS or you will have a diff that looks like this :finger:
