a question for landrover owners

how many people on here own a p38 range rover ?
and if you dont why not. is because you cant get the aftermaket parts we all want or the price of them or because of the problems that seem to plage them ?

Have looked at them, but back then, a couple of years ago, they were too exepensive, and yeah there were known issues with some of the early technology, air bags for example. Many of these issues have now been overcome. Know someone that had one for years, and was very happy with it.

Would look at them now if I was in the market, but have drifted more towards early Discos cause they are cheaper, can be modded more easily and parts are readily available.

Mods for P38 are hard to come by in Aus, but plenty in USA.

Probably not alot own them due to the computer side of it, its scary, what do you do if one fails? Mechanically they are not that much different to any rangie but they are very wiz bang in the electronic department, all i need on my rangie is a good starter, and power to my injecter pump, simple

They are a nice looking car but still suffer from the lemon factor of too many scary stories ie dropped cylinder liners in 4.6's, blend motors in a/c, heater cores leaking, airbag failure, abs failure. They are getting quite cheap now and as Reddo said most would have had all the fixes done by now so for the price they would have to be a consideration especially if you can get a nice clean well maitained example.

Yep, mate of mines 4.6 dropped the liner, got it in bits now deciding what to do with it. Were going to put an injected Holden 5 litre in it but to much stuffing around with the computer side of things like the brakes and stuff.

I nearly bought one the other day 20K, green, 4.0SE cloth trim, and 100,000K on the clock, immaculate could not find one fault with it and believe me I spent nearly 45 mins looking.

Here is what I reckon, I would only buy a 4.0 SE - the engines rarely fark up and they don;t seem to stress the gbox at all, know of serveral that have done 300,000K + of metro driving without a box replacement.

I wouldn;t wheel one - old classic (dungas) are just too cheap to go past.

As for the computer side of things, I would really worry about them - I know of a few "known issues" with them, gbox ecu buring out the low range high range selector etc.

EAS - piece of cake to fix these days, "The Airbag man" sells bags for them for around $120 last time I checked, just have to buy a pair and the system runs on enzed fittings and nylon hose, only mod I would make would be to do what a mate has and fit a really flash 12v air pump as and auxilary to help it come up from "dead flat" (i.e no air in the reserve tank) with that you would prolongue the life of the main pump and have way to get around nearly every serious eas failure (valve block is the only weak link then)

They are a great car and I will buy one, just not right now, it doesn;t fit in my financial plan at this time.

The are an excellent ride, my dad had one for a year or two, I should have bought it off him when he changed it over.

happy to stuff around I know of one a few years back where a bloke used a loan to buy one for $40 or so K and then destroyed the gbox somehow, paid $6K to have it fixed then promptly cooked it when a rad hose split and was quote $15K for a motor, it sat in bits at the engine repairers for a few years until the finance company repo'd it and sold it off, I think I offered $4K for it .... I never heard back ... guess it was too low, worth more for the parts. I was going to try and fix her up with a disco motor or something similar

I've commonly seen 4.6 HSEs (early ones) pull 5k or less at the damaged auctions, light damage too - normally outer pannels and such.

I've just bought a one owner 96 HSE for the missus to run around in. It had the liner issue a couple of years ago & had a new short motor fitted. Hopefully, the motor won't be a problem again.

There's too much plastic for my liking to take it off road but I'm sure it would handle most of the tracks I tackle.
I'd just have to stop to pick up the bits that fall off .
