Transfer Case problem 60 Series

Post by QIKAZZ »

Hey guys, few months ago I went out wheelin and was just starting up a hill and all this grinding started from the transfer case, and I lost drive to the front wheels. I was a bit weird, I tried H4 and L4 and it was the same, I rolled backwards down the hill, re selected L4 and it went fine.

Then last night it done the same thing, only this time I could not get it to stop grinding no matter what I tried, I eventually gave up, a little later I tried again but just on a dirt road, and it seemed ok in H4, but I seemed to be having a little trouble on the slipper stuff, making me think I still had no front wheel drive. (But wasnt sure as was very slippery, and still was fully aired up and there was NO grinding)

Anyway when I got home, I dis-engaged the hubs, put the transfer box into H4, went under the car and I could spin the front drive shaft, but it was hard and turning in notches, like the gear mesh is not lined up properly internaly.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what this could be?

Sorry for the long winded explanation, but I wanted to try be as clear as possible.

Cheers

Check the linkages from the shifter to the tcase, a mates linkages came loose and had the same issues you are having. Fixed the linkages and all good. Otherwise might be time to drop that t-case and take a look inside it.

I think i have the same Prob is yours a Vac operated Transfer Case? cause mine made a wierd grating noise a couple times on the beach when at fraser.

The beach condition went hard and soft, once i got on the hard stuff it would everynow and again make a grating noise like it wasnt in 4wd properly, is this the transfer binding up? Went fine as long as it was soft when in H4 :?

Sorry to sorta high jack your thread.

nope mine is not Vac operated, I am pretty sure ive fixed mine, there is 2 levers on the transfer stick, one engages 4wd, the other switches from high to low, seems the one that engages 4wd pulls OUT of the gearbox and it was not pulling out enough, although it did it once before the body lift, it seems the hole i made was not quiet big enough and was making it worse, so I cut the hole in the body bigger and it seems better, I will have to wait and see.

Although just another question, it seems its only coming out about another 2mm at the most, is that really enough to make such a big difference or does it seem like things a getting a bit worn out in there?

Cheers
