My mates are looking into getting a new cruiser ute. They have a 98 75 series which has done around 230 000kms and the gearbox is on it's way out. The cruiser carries heavy loads which there mechanic said thats the cause of the gearbox wearing out.
Does the 79 series use the 100 series gearbox and is that in all of the utes or only the turbo models? Also is the new gearbox alot stronger then the old 75 series?

If the ute is still reliable, I would be tempted to overhaul the gearbox and clock up another 230 000kms. I'm sure it's only the bearings that are failing.
My brothers work had 2 Rodeos (2.something tD). Both fully loaded at just under Holdens recommendations. The gearboxes on both cars needed re-building at 80 to 90 000km intervals (Both twice!). Holden said they were isolated instances but the frequency and type or bearing failure pointed directly at overloaded bearings.
The gears in most gearboxes rarely wear, so it's a good bet that new bearings and sincros (if needed) is all that will be required.

They'd rather trade it in now before they get 2 many more Km's on it and get a crap trade-in on a new one.
The mechanic did say it is the front bearing in the gearbox.

The 79 series t/d has a h150 box that is an 80 series diesel box. Quite strong, especially with 5th gear and towing/load carrying. The standard diesel 79 i am not sure about, but if it is a r150 box, they are a prado box and come standard in the 1hz 100 series aswell. Not real strong, but they shift very car like, just what toyota needed for the 100 :-0

As said above boxes from behind 1HD-FTE in 100 series and 78-9 is like old 80 series gearbox.( good box )
The box behind 1HZ's in 100 and 78-9 is the prado box and is designed to make Toyota lots of money. Have seen many failures in these boxes already.

the 79 diesels seriously have the R151F gearbox? that's nasty. Bad toyota. BAD. NO BISCUIT!
the H150/151 from 80 series are bulletproof, with 5th gear in the middle (H55F 75 series and R151F bundera, prado, 100 series NA diesel) have 5th hanging off the end. the H15x also have and oil pump and multiple synchros on 2nd gear, and synchro reverse.
that said the H55F is pretty tough and if your only complaint about the truck is gearbox noise, it's a cheap box to overhaul. a high km 75 isn't worth heaps as a trade in anyway. drive it to death
