gday all, i need some guidance and as im sure alot of you may have been in a similar position before and will be able to help. i have a 85 cruiser ute, running a 2h which has been rebuilt about 50K ago and i was looking at a turbo or supercharger for it. question is, is it worth spending all the money on a 2h or should i source a 1hz? i will only be running mild boost and possibly an intercooler. ive heard that 2h's are a physically stronger engine, but are more prone to melting with turbos. also would a turbo or supercharger be the way to go? and guidance would be much appreciated.

If you can afford it go the 1HZ. The like a turbo with mild boost and an intercooler. The 1HZ will give you a good life span if you look after it. The 2H needs to be living on the edge to come close to the power of a 1HZ with a turbo on it.
I have a 2H with a supercharger. The low down grunt is great, but i wouldn't do it again. Next time i'd turbo i reckon.

yeah i think i might hold on to the 2h, im not going for heaps of power all i want is something that will sit on a 110 comfortably without dropping back to 70 on a hill. and in the future turn 35's with relative ease although diff gears will probly be changed also. so would it be safe to say that with mild boost i should keep the reliabilty and get a reasonable life span? im guessing an intercooler would be wise too, and is it worth getting a 3 inch exhaust, i have 2.5 now. thanks for you replys and insights.

With only mild boost, the 2H will still be a very reliable motor. Add an intercooler and you will add to it's longevity. EGT's kill 'em, but you really only worry about that if you're going for maximum grunt.
Someone once told me a 2H is good for 500K stock, or 300-350K turbo'd - all things being equal. Probably about right.
I sometimes run 35's and you certainly notice the difference, but it's cool to stretch the gears on the old 5 speed occasionally and spare the left foot. 4.88 diff gears would just about return final drive to stock - or at least make it little different from running 31's with standard gears.
Mine cruises at 110 no worries with either set of feet. Boost tops out at about 15PSI, but rarely goes over 10. Would love a water-to-air I/C, but can't justify the coin.
Go the 3" exhaust. You're gonna have to mess with it anyway if you fit a turbo.
Make sure your injectors are good, too. Leaky ones wreck pistons.
Edit: why even consider a supercharger? Way more parts and experience in turboing these motors for a reason.

I'd be cautious running 10-15psi on a 2H without an intercooler and pyro. If you fuel that up it'll possibly die.
I'm running 8psi at peak (no intercooler) and I see EGT's on inclined highways or up the beach in soft sand get just over 400, If I tried that up a mountain with a trailer I'm sure I'd be seeing 450-500 which is as high as I'd want to see it. I'm staying under 550, which is what's been mentioned around here as the highest post turbo temp you should see.
My 2H had 330k on it when I turbo'd it so I'm sticking to the conservitive end :)
Factory boost on a 12H-T and the ARB (Garrett) 2H kit both peak at 8psi, neither of them came with pyros, so they are well within limits and a good place to start before ramping it up.
