Power Loss

Post by James Brittain »

Hi Guys.

Got a little problem i can't get my head around.

Ive got a 300tdi disco and when accelerating (noticeable in 1st & 2nd) gently but steadily the engine seems to hit a plateau at around 2100rpm.

The truck simply accelerates nicely and then when it gets to around 2100 its as if it drops power and more throttle is needed to get it up and over this hurdel and accelerating nicely again.

I can't notice the power loss in 3rd and 4th. The truck feels fine power wise, its just at around 2100 where it seems to hit a bit of a wall. Its as if you have turned around a bend into a really strong head wind. There is a noticable slow in the acceleration acceleration and drop in engine noise.

Any ideas?

Do you notice any smoke or lack of it at this point?

Do you have a boost guage on the turbo?

Hi Ben.

Nah i can't see any smoke really.

To be honest she doesn't seem to smoke at all really. But then i cant see very well with it being behind me and having tinted windows etc.

And no i dont have a boost gauge on it either.

Any ideas?

She does seem slow. Quite a bit slower than my 90 which had 35's and standard grearing and then all of the rollcage and standard winch comp flare on top of that.

There are several things that could do what you are experiencing - but all will be either fuel or boost related.

If there are no leaks or restrictions in the pipework, then it will likely be the pump. May be a good idea to pull the stop solenoid out to see if there are any metal particles in there (some VE pumps had this problem).

If you fit an EGT and a boost guage you will know more about what is happening - and then they will allow you to tweak the pump so you get better performance.
