Outer Limits 4x4 Board

It totally depends on the industry as to mark ups.

some are as little as 10%, some are as much as 1000%. As a general Rule look at the size of the building its in and thats how big the mark up is. big overheads mean the business has to have big margins to survive. so yeah furniture takes alot of space so they need to make big $ per item.

Though normally you expect big % margins on smaller items and smaller % items on bigger items as there is more competition and interest in selling big $ sales.

most companies not selling their own brnds would try to get 100 - 125%, but companies who sell their own brands make far far more!

damn i wish I had big margins... I might get into furniture or 4wd accessories instead.

Generally you will find most retailers have to follow a recommended retail price list, for example ARB would send out these rrp lists to all distributors, most retail prices come from the wholesaler.

Well I'll begin with what would of been my original reply, yes, ARB bought the rights to and have since vastly developed the makes and strength of the roberts diff lock.....

But since having a PM from our friend Daniel, about the who's and whatsits of ARB diff locks...........they're still a bunch of tools who can;t create shit, without copying.............much like the Chinese

Photo's are slowly starting to emerge of these things...Yesterday i saw a pic of the Air Compressor partly stripped down and one of the gaskets was made from a old Coca Cola box ..........Most of us have probably used something similar at one point but it aint something you would expect brand new.

I was also told that Chinese locker munched its self too pieces at only 1/4 of the torque compared to the ARB locker destroying an axle.

(disclaimer)Pics and info was gathered at one of the above mentioned parties stores and may or may not have been doctored to make themselves look better.

Anyway after seeing what i did yesterday i wouldnt be going anywhere near the things.

im sure if these cheap locker have shltty cast gears in them, you would be able to go and get some machined up from somewhere. surely. if the price of getting some of these gears made is reasonable then it could be a good investment. but then its the old trick of you strengthening something and guess what part is the next weakest link.

by the time you have found that out and replaced them with stronger bits you prolly be better off buying the arbair locker. go figure.

If you are that worried about the side gears, BUY the arb replacements.

I BET they woudl bolt straight in.
Also, get the ARB seals ( like they are indestructable anyhow)

Kinda like those Chonda water pumps- when something buggers up, you take it to the honda dealership and get a genuine honda bit.

I saw one where you could SEE where they had die ground the honda part number off the alloy engine case!

The seller does not even reply to questions now

So after all this is anyone going to get one and test it or will that be my job?????????? and if i get it i will have it looked at by a metalurgist,to determine there build quality.

I'm quite looking forward to hearing the results. Today, I found out that one of my work colleagues is one of the partners in the Ebay Store that sells these things and he reckons they haven't had any complaints to date.

These, like the cheaper ring and pinion sets, obviously need to be tested, but they DO represent a significant saving. Consider the current group buy from BBM of the ring and pinion sets. Not long ago, no one would have even thought of sanctioning anything less than genuine Nissan gears.

Its worth a go I reckon, and I look forward to hearing the test results.

I own Hitachi, Makita and GMC tools.

The GMC stuff gets a flogging, and whilst not as quiet, smooth and precise, they keep on cutting and cutting and cutting.

Does it work is more important than how the diff centre looks.

Which would cost AT LEAST the difference in price between the chinese locker and an ARB one you don't have to be suspiscious of the quality of.

Excellent example - Personally I don't like cheap tools either cause whilst they might come with a 12month replacement warranty you get sick of the hassle of returning the danged things for replacement...Plus often when they shyt themselves the hardware store is closed...Plus they are just unpleasant to use.
If you don't care about quality and reliability then by all means grab yourself a "bargin", but don't come come-a-whining back when (not if) the shyte hits the fan

nar i know a bloke who is a gear cutter and does tractor pulling for a sport and he said he would test them for me

ARRRRRRRRRRRR but wooders i bet you have booty fab stuff that is not as good as brought or factory stuff but it will still hold up under normal conditions . so at the end of the day a cheap socket will do the same job as a $10 socket but hey ,you dont always get what you pay for (especially when brand names are concerned).2c

Like I said, the guy who owns the Ebay shop reckons he's had none come back broken, and his margins aren't all that flash.

Currently he's near to selling a 12V electric pump that takes fuel from jerry cans to the vehicle. Also looking at similar thing for 44's to car. Grey nomads doing the Simpson I suppose!!

We shared a furniture shop a few years back after a b-double hit our shop. Their average mark up was 200%. However.

Some of the bigger chains (hardly normal/bad guys etc) operate on nearly nil mark up, and rely on kickbacks for volume product movement from the manufacturers.

corn flakes boxes make great thermostat gaskets

True, compressor quality is an issue. But on my old Mav' I ran two Ebay (Max Air copies) in an on board air system, and they ran ok. The biggest issue was that they drew 40A a piece .
