Land Rover made the first mass produced civillian 4x4 back in 1948 (admittedly it was based on the WW1 jeep) - then Jeep, Toyota, Nissan and everyone else copied them.

Then they built the Range Rover - the first of the 'non agricultural' (read comfortable) 4x4's - as Tom said with coils and discs all round - the best suspension travel for a stock 4x4, power steering, and a nice light, powerful V8. ALL THE WAY BACK IN 1969!!! At a time when All toyota and nissan offered were agricultural 'trucks' with leaves and drums all round and metal dashboards.

Land Rover was also the first to introduce a direct injection diesel in a passenger 4x4 - the ISUZU 4BD1 in 1981!!! Followed by the Tdi in 1989. Then the first (AFAIK) to introduce a common rail diesel, in 2000.

They also put a D60 (Salisbury) in their vehicles in 1971 - again long before any passenger 4x4 - the US are only just catching up. Only trucks like the F250 get D60's.

So how much mre proof do you want that they did everything first and everyone copied them. The only thing they weren't first at was inventing the "soft" 4x4's like the Rav4 - but I think not being the first with a pathetic excuse for a 4x4 like that is an achievement also.

who else had an all coil, v8, power-steering beast in the early 70s?

Dosent mean they got it right though..

Didn't they? Took Nissan & Toyota till the mid eighties to get some of those features, such as 4 wheel discs & AWD, and Toyota still can't make a decent AWD system.

Don't you mean early 80's?
Peter.

What was the first coil sprung, full time 4x4 with discs all round from Toyota, thought it was in 1989 - nissan even beat you ... 1987 that is late 80s in my book

Heard of a LANDROVER? They ALL have 3.3:1 low range totally standard.

(I know, I couldn't believe it myself when I was told!!)

I think the lowest STOCK transfer case gearing award belongs to the poms on this one

I don't think I'd say Toyota = Refinement....probably boring reliability ;)

But overall I think you've summed it up best......
No ya all's know I'm a jeep nut - but there is noway I'd claim the Tj Rubicon to bethe most capable stock 4bee ever - that's just a silly call - there are quite a few rigs that were "stock" with dual lockers etc...

Besides even if the rubi was available here I'd probably not buy it....the unlimited (LWB TJ) however I'd like a lot more :D

That is corect, if you hadn't said this I wouldn't have posted, as the Bundera never had a V8 standard in the early 80's, and my post count would be about 25 less

I think the best thing to come from this, (apart from some stimulating debate) is the O/Limits membership boost.
Maybe we should have a poll next week along the lines of "DO SISSYS DRIVE JEEPS", think of people all around the world who will join up just to defend themselves :D
The following week it will be Toyota's, then Nissans ect ect, dont bother with Suzuki's, we are used to being called sissys
Peter
ps I still only voted once. :)

And guess what? You would be HEAVELY out numbered M8!
The Jeeps Unlimeted forum has THOUSANDS of members who would jump on over to debate the issue.......could be very interesting dont you think?

On second thought lets skip the Jeeps and go straight to the Toyota's
(I know they have a sense of humor  ) I couldn't hack another week of "best all round, goes anywhere, longer penis, first 4x4, ultimate, bla bla bla"
why can't they all be like wooders?
They are right, it is a jeep thing, and I don't get it!
(and they probably think that was a complement  )
Peter.
ps, apologys to the reasonable jeepers out there, (both of you  )
