Bah, spent a few minutes angle grinding this pipe under the sump. Couldn't get all the way around the pipe though and gave that up after making a couple of deep nicks in the sump hacksawed upside down for another 20 minutes or so and couldn't get through. Decided to try undoing the extractors from the head on that side, and what do you know? Piece of cake (ignoring the squashed fingers and dropped tools trying to get at the bolts tucked behind the pipes)! Then once the extractors were off, and since the flange was undone on the other side, I could lean the pipes away from the engine and get a spanner on the single remaining flange bolt. So now the engine and exhaust is out, and the pipe under the sump is holding on by 20mm of nicked metal.Heathx4 wrote:Currently it has extractors on both sides that join to single pipes via a 3 bolt sandwich. The driver side pipe wraps close to sump and crosses over the other one before joining it ~400mm later into a single 3".
Tonight I was able to unbolt the passenger side, but couldn't get a spanner on one of the bolts in the drivers side.

Gday mate,
Just chasing a bit of advise on getting a nice note outta my 1.3l serria. Atm its running lukey extractors and a lukey stright thru with a resonator up front (bout 2 inches away from the extractors) and a 2 inch pipe. What mufflers would you suggest to make it not sound like an old truck (the drianpipe sound). Im just after a nice crisp note, not droney. Wat difference would it make running the resonator after the muffler in sound?
Cheers Dan

by putting a big straight through system you will increase flow and this will also help with heat it will not build up as much in the system

G'day mate, ive got a gq td42, looking at turboing it when funds permit, was just wondering if there would be any disadvantage to making the exhaust up out of 3" 304 stainless tube and mandrel bends, i can get this stuff for free, if im patient (picked up 2 45s and 2 90s last night) and can weld it no dramas.
Thanks in advance.

gday mate,
got a question as to what size exhaust i should run on my GU tb45e?
was thinking 2.5inch? but the standard exhaust looks like its a bit bigger than 2inch so would 2.5inch make enough of a difference?
maybe 3inch? or would that be too big?
thanks mate.

if you go to big you wil loose low down torque
do not go 3 " that is to big
2.5" would be the max for that, use a large straight through muffler in the front and a good resenator in the rear

A mate of mine just bougt a new vz dunnydore ute. It's got the 3.6 litre in it and he has been told of a different system at each place he goes to and generally has no idea which way to go.
The ute is just a personal car, he just wants it to sound good. It does get driven on long drives often as he lives in Mt Isa so having a real loud system than just drones on in the car is out of the question.
Any ideas on what to run would be helpful.
Cheers

whats my best options in terms of extractors and exhaust in regards to getting the most torque outa the motor? noise and whatnot isnt a problem as long as I dont get done by the EPA.
p.s. sorry if this has been asked before... you almost need a forum of your own!!

question
Dr Ex,
Have 1KZ TE hilux ( factory 3 L turbo), my exhaust temp reaches 500 degs when hauling ass, what is the highest exhaust temp i can run in this motor without seriously putting the motor and turbo at risk, as i plan on turning the boost up a bit (13.5 to 14 psi)?
Also i currently run a 2.5 inch press bent exhaust with high flow muffler, would it be better to go 2.5 or 3 inch mandrel bent with same muffler and drop the exhaust out infront of the rear wheel?
Thanks heaps Luv to 4B

I have a long wheelbase GQ patrol 4.2 non turbo diesel totally stock. The original muffler in this thing is huge! and rusting through from the outside. What is my best option apart from genuine for replacement with one that is hopefully not noisier and may increase fuel economy/power?
Curious what would be the result if I fitted 2 hotdogs in-line instead of another muffler? There is already a muffler shaped genuine resinator at the tailpipe.
thanks fnq

i was thinking twin (2" or 2.25"??) into Y pipe, into 2.5" single pipe next to g/box, 3" cat, undercab then up the back of the cab into a single oval muffler 2.5" inlet with twin outlets, then twin mini stacks coming up though the front of the tray.
i need maximum low down torque that i can get, what is your opinion on pipe size and muffler choice. do u think i should get a resonator (oval or hotdog).
whatever i need to do or should change to get more torque, i would love to know thankyou.

Hi Ross,
Was wondering if it would be possible to get any useful gains out of my 88' pajero 2.6 (astron 2). Was hoping for slightly better economy and possible some more power without moving the torque too far up the rev range. I'm not far from your workshop, so might be some work for you too.
Cheers,
Mick.

I have a 340 hemi pumping out 700HP ( can supply dyno sheets if needed to better enhance power curve ) , the stractors are at the end of their life with a few minor pit holes appearing around mainly the second collectors.
The body type is a CL Charger by Chrysler, does not have power steering but does have a remote oil filter setup & there 's an auto in behind the motor.

i need to know if its for road use or track
you do know they are one of the hardest cars to build a good set of extractors on
It will run @ Calder on the odd occasion and will do daily driver duties occasionally too.
Yes I know how hard a good set of extractors is to get for em ..... you ought to try fitting em up

and found the pacemakers gave good results. I'd presume your running a 727 tranny with this, and morelikely a floor mount shifter, so clearance should be no probs with up to a twin 2.5 inchs system. They come in two port sizes, ie small for 272, 318 etc, and larger for J heads that came on the 340 and 360's, but with the hp your quoting, you must be running heavily worked larger port J or W heads? or alloy Indies? Again at that hp you'll gain a fair wack of velocity buy port matching your headers, pretty easy to do also. If your gunna custom make some, get on to the Mancini, headman, or even Moparchat.com websites, which have got freakin buckets of info from the US.
BTW, my last 318, stroked to 408, made an @ extra 40hp/35ft/lbs by switching from the shitty CRS block huggers that came with it to tuned length Pacemakers.
Post some pics of the CL man!

Hi Ross,
Ive got a HJ47 Cruiser Ute, now im going to change the extractors over so i have the exhaust running outside the chassis rail on the passenger side and then run it into a stack on the back of the cab on the passenger side (all in 2.5in).
I have a mate with the same vehicle and he runs extractors into 2.5 inch for about 3 feet and then into 3 inch for about 4 or 5 feet exiting under the rear of the drivers door with no muffler. His exhaust is a bit too loud for me so i was considering running a resonator to quieten it a little or maybe a small straight through muffler.
I still want a good note just not the drone his has at high revs so which would you recommend or do you have another suggestion?
Cheers, Tooheys
