Some of the guys competing have very little sponsorship at all. Although Dave has benefitted from some donations of kit, such as winch ropes, spotlights and a few odds and ends of spares, etc all the main expenses have come out of our own bank account. For a UK entrant that's not just entry fee, but also airfares, overseas container transport for the motor, custom fees, Australian car reg/insurance fees.....something of a once in a lifetime experience worth digging deep in your pocket for. If Dave doesn't finish the event he will be gutted but will have still had a fantastic experience and it will have been money well spent. If he finishes then that will be a huge bonus ! :)

Well if this is the case then that is not the spirit at all. Can kiss anymore sponsorship deals goodbye if this is true.

... bit harsh, what the bloke cant walk, how is he going to run ahead, or up a sand dune, dragging a sand anchor, or winch cable throw a billabong of slurry without timing out?

I agree with Ruff on the sponsor thing.

that may work, but again depends how fubar the ankle is. Seems a lot of effort went into gettin the truck ready at the last minute to drop out with what may seem minor to some, but hey life is cruel.

... most rolled ankles Ive had are 'good to go' with good RICE by next morning if your lucky.

Sounds like the Mud is big, the stages are getting worse with every car thru them and they are forced to navigate into the middle of lagoons so navi is basically swimming out there.

Roger Smith has damaged A frame and shreded a prop shaft into 3 bits, repaired and back on road.

Hummer had some trouble in the bog with water in electrics stopping him twice.

In general sounds like some of the big boys are haveing trouble so could be a newie up this year.

All this on the grape vine so if wrong sorry, will post whenever I get some info.

Have spoken with T. Trudi (spectator following group D), Jonesy (competing with Roger Smith in group D) and Hobzee (competing in group E) as they all passed through areas with phone reception. Apologies for any incorrect info in this report but sources were driving at the time and in a rush so don't shoot the messager :)

GROUP D

~ To start with this group has Piglet, Mani and Birddy so you could imagine the fun and laughter they are having

~ On sunday night Roger was the first from their group to drive the night billabong run until Birddy drove it and knocked 1 min off his time.

~ On Monday they had a stage like Wilga of 2001 where they had to drive from plot to plot via billabongs and obstacles. Don't believe any team from their group completed this??????

~ Had another stage on Monday ahich involved 50 odd plots where they headed to the first where they would receive the co-ordinates for the next and so on. Aparently (?????) it was a bit of a balls up with most in the group stuffing it up and the stage marshals then called it off. A couple of the teams were still competing in the stage during this time and had got it right so it probably won't be the end we here of this :bad-words:

~ During the above stage Birddy got stuck badly enough that he burnt out his winch motor and then required 3 other teams all using double line pulls to winch him out!!

~ Brett Schrivner (sp?) from Queanbeyan (????) coped a tree branch through the windscreen during the above stage which nearly took out his navvy and bent up his roof. He had to return to B.H. for repairs.

~ Alan Cuthill and Shane from Gippsland Vic ????? did an alternator on the first night and DNF'd the fist night stage (not sure if this was Stephen's Creek or the mud night stage) but are back in and running consistantly and are competitive (from T. trudi).

~ Last night at Denien (monday night) Roger and Jonesy screwed off the rear tailshaft due to the rear tailing arm mounts shifting while under full noise in the motorkhana and had to DNF the stage and return to B.H. for repairs. They returned by morning after an all nighter and haven't missed a stage.

Quick story - I had this happen in a mates Rangie in the 2003 Vic Winch as the mounts and chassis are weak and move thus allowing the tailshaft to hit an A Frame mount bolt under full compression and the tailshaft just twists off. I was welding Roger's rear bar on a couple of weeks ago and said to Jonesy that i was surprised Roger hadn't already bent these mounts and they are prone to bending!!!! Am I bad

~ Roger and Jonesy then proceeded to blow a hub on the Gunbarrel SS which hampered their time.

~ Birddy ran the fastest time for the day motorkhana SS. He seems the one to beat in this group.

~ Word from T. Trudi is the single cab hilux from South Africa that rolled at Stephen's Creek SS is going very well and is among the front runners in the group.

~ 8 out of the 12 teams in group D drove the sandwall. Roger, Piglet, Alan Cuthill and another winched.

~ The time to beat from the previous group was 29 secs set by Rohan and Cass which Birddy did beat. Apparently Rohan & Cass's group had a harder run up the wall on day one due to a 2 metre sand drift on the peak which they flattened off. The word from everyone at Denein is Rohan's vehicle absolutey flys!!!!

~ Group D is heading to Poolamacca 1 tonight, then Nundooka Thursday and Poolamacca 2 on Friday.

GROUP E

~ This group was at the mud today and was the first group to have teams get to the last major billabong in the plot-obstacle-plot-obstacle SS with 3 teams attempting it and Hobzee the only one to get past and on the X-terrains! He was pumped

~ Chunck and Pete are in this group, having a pretty good run and in the top half of the group.

~ White Rangie from W.A. was competing in this group but has had to retire with oil pressure issues.

~ Kevin Nott and Theo in a blue GQ Turbo diesel ute are limping along with a dodgy viscous fan coupling and are trying to avoid the 100 pt penalty for outside assistance by pushing on with it.

~ Nathan and Wayne in a GQ shorty were in B.H. looking for another alternator.

NEWS FROM OTHER GROUPS

~ There was a vehicle which tipped on it's side on day one but not sure who????

~ Mike Smith blew a diff on the motorkhana on day one and returned to B.H. for repairs. There was a donor rangie at Silver City, the source for Roger's tailshaft, but it had different ratios to Mike's diffs so they replaced both. Then Laurie Griffiths (bush rangie) arrived at Silver City with a busted diff with the same ratios as Mike's original ones so he's now running Mike's other diff.

Sorry I've taken so long to pass on the info but have been busy settling in mother and new baby daughter after coming home from the hospital today. :)

Hope to hear from Hobzee tomorrow night as he transports from Denien to Poolamacca 1.

Cheers, Shane.

Drafty and Birdy DNF'D the prologue stage - they were trying to get the truck back on all 4's and in doing so went out of the course boundary. Still they had an AWWWSOME time doing this - BLOODY ATTENTION SEEKERS.

T.Trudi said this was unbelievable  As they tipped on their side were still sliding Birddy sunk right foot into it and seemed to turn down on the steering and under full throttle the front tyre gripped and ripped them back onto all 4's but by this time they had gone through the bunting and DNF'd due to 4 wheels outside the course :bad-words:

Hope they have got footage for the DVD :D

Got his wrong. As per above it was Birddy that tipped and then got back on all 4's not Mani.

Sorry to question the rulz....but isn't this 'outside assisstance'????

Does this mean they get a 100pt penalty for getting a vehicle brought to town for them, as well as the other teams such as Roger to pilfer off it?? It thought there were queries over this rule last year....... :? ;) :?:

The way I understand it. Yes that is a outside assisstance penalty. But they only get one penalty for both diffs.
Each time they go for repairs, they can strip the whole car and rebuild. And that is only one outside assisstance.
Thats why if I was the guys in the GQ with the buggered fan, I would be pushing on untill something else broke. To make the 100pt penalty worth it.

In case you guys didn't see this post in general:

toughnut wrote:Well the truck was holding up quite well with only a few tyre punctures. We didn't count on steve, my navi tearing some ligaments in his ankle on the night stage at nundooka. First night was awsome and it just got better from there. Even Steven's on saturday night was the first stage to set the order for the prologue on sunday. Chris Hummer set the quickest time with 2.45 in his rangie. We did a 3.36 in our GU ute. Not too bad for our first ever run. It set us at 41st out out of 57 vehicles. The last couple of vehicles didn't run till about 1.00pm. The run started on the bank of the creek dropping down onto the sand where we went across the creek did a u-turn and came back across through a few more u-turns and then straightened up for about 500m to a becon for a u-tun back down the creek. It then weaved a bit went through a very tight gate and down to the finish garage. Both of the South African hilux's rolled on this stage as well as one of the british Ibex's. The prologue on Sunday had us out of a gate across some rocks and through a waterhole, u-turn back onto some rocks and through some deep wombat holes, u-turn over a jump, u-turn through another waterhole up to a huge boiler for a winch over the top. U-turn back through the wombat holes and rocks, u-turn through the first waterhole again and over the first rocks and into the finish garage next to the start. We had a time of 4.38 with our first ever winch together. The fastest I think was about 2.57. Amazing to watch. Birdy in his GQ took off from the winch and into the u-turn up on 2 wheels and nearly flipped it. He turned into the roll and changed gears kept the boot in (all on 2 wheels) and got back onto 4wheels onto the course and kept going for a really quick time. Awsome bit of driving. Still can't believe he changed gears on 2 wheels. After this we were split up into 5 groups. Our group had us(GU ute), Matt bolger(GU ute), AndyMillar(GQ shorty), Chris Hummer(Rangie, shorty), Steve Graham(hilux dualcab, almost stock), Chris Nash(GQ ute), Greg Scanlon(GQ ute), Todd and Verena Joyce(FJ40), MaxBaerlocher(wrangler), Mark Boas(GQ shorty). All in all a good spread of experience and competition. We went out to poolamica and did the creek run and then the first winch wall with a nav. We completed the first run in 28min with a winch. When we stopped we discovered a split tyre so we changed that for the next stage. We did the winch wall and started the run down the creek which had deep soft sand and sharp rocks which we cut another tyre on so we had to stop and repair the first tyre and replace the second one. We got underway again and finished in 2hours 10min. We then sat on our asses for about 3 hours which we used to repair the tyres we stuffed on the previous stages. Then we went out to Nundooka for the night Brumby's run. We only got the 3 compulsory points and returned with Steve Baker our navi tearing some ligaments in his ankle getting out of the truck to spot for me. Had to take it steady getting back cause the ground is really rough and his ankle was buggered. We finished with 4 min to spare. Woke up the next morning with Steve's ankle resembling a grapefruit so we decided to come into town and get it checked out properly. This put us out of the comp cause we didn't have any spare ankles. We are filling in time now helping out at Silver City 4x4 getting repairs done for the other competitors. This years comp is much tougher than previous events cause the amounts of repairs to things like chassis' and suspension is up on previous years. Denis, Julie and the guys here are working 24hours a day keeping the guys in the comp. There are a few guys from overseas finding things a bit tough with one of the hilux's having come into Silver City 3 times already. The south african Jeep has been in to repair thier front shock mounts twice. Steve hobbs has done a CV and in the process had the winch wall he did it on cancelled for the comp. The mud out at Viewmont has played havoc with alternators so far. That's about it so far, I'm sure I've missed something but I'm hanging around till the end of the week so I'll keep posting updates for you guys.

Spoke briefly to T. Trudi (spectator following group D) a couple of hours ago. They didn't see much action today so don't have much to report.

GROUP D

~ Roger and Jonesy were limping their way back to B.H. again this afternoon after dropping the rear end out of the rangie while climbing the smaller winch wall at Poolamacca 1. The tailshaft dropped out, bent a control arm and the springs were left hanging in mid air. I think the A frame failed. After some rock building to put it back together they are mobile but not enough to compete so repairs are necessary :bad-words:

~ Alan Cuthill and Shane are still competing well and have had a good event so far for first timers.

GROUP A

~ T. Trudi got to see Greg Scanlon winch up the larger winch wall and record the fastest time for the day for their group. Aparently this winch wall is an absolute monster!!!!

~ I asked about Hummer and Coops and T. Trudi said she didn't get to talk to them or see them do the large winch wall SS but their rangie was there and they seem to be still competing.

Sorry to all those who are requesting info on particular teams but the reports I'm getting are pretty limited.

Hoping to hear from Jonesy as he should be in B.H. now and Hobzee should be getting phone reception soon as he transports from Denien to Poolamacca 1 so will update when I hear more.

Cheers, Shane.
