i got my set finished but i made my own brackits .my hand break is not as good as i hoped as its still not sorted but on the road the breaks work great locks up all four with the simex. as for adapter break lines 80 series front fit straight on you just have to cut a locating tag off the line.
subaru l series calipers where fun to find but sun spares at yandina qld have plenty in stock for $130 a pair and will send them to you (not sure how much postage). also repco and super cheep are hopeless and kept trying to give me the wrong pads so you need db418 pads for them to as the wreckers throw them out most of the time

as for the over size hole in the centre its actually 91-111mm so was thinking of making some press on rings to take the slack would any one else be keen in some

are the 4runner alxe diameters all the same, likewise for the gq patrol vented discs?
I would appreciate a coupla of sleaves if and when I get all my parts together

sorry Im lost, Sloshy what does you use cutting brakes mean? never heard that term before, are your gq rotors a tight fit on the axle or sloppy as?

these are cutting brakes, they allow you to lock up 1 or 2 wheels at a time (hydraulic handbrake)comp use only.

Did any one work out if the new axle studs had to be M8, M10 or M12
Im guesing they are closer to M10 x 1.0, could someone confirm this?

New axle studs? Just use your old ones.

the original studs are long enough to fasten the new caliper bracket to the diff housing?

can someone give me a update on how it done PLEASE
Press it all off then press the bearing/retainer and collar back on.
I just cut the backing plates off with the 4in

ok ,so you cut the backing plate off, is the small section of backing plate around the bearing retainer still there? does tit need to be there, a few posts have said remove completely, others have said cut it off

its all gone I just cut most of the way in on both sides and then flexed the backing plate back and forth until the last bit of metal cracked and snapped so the backing plates in two pieces

my brake peddle has a fair bit of travel but when the travel takes up the brakes are sweet as. (and no the system has no air in it) is this normal when u do this conversion and keep the hilux master cylinder. just wondering if this is why people go to an 80 series master?

Thanks Rick

that would be the semi floating bearing bit doing that
, as the pads are getting knocked from side to side due to the endfloat, pushes the pistons inside the caliper back, allowing an air gap to form, you would need to change master cylinders to allow for a different residaul pressure at the rear calipers to hold the cylinders tighter, I believe prado master cylinders bolt straight in, locktup4x4 has em as they are disc to disc design

Yea, been told Playdo master and booster is the way to fly ;)

I just run the 80 series master with the standard hilux booster and my brakes are fine.

so the 80 series is a direct bolt on replacement to the hilux/4runner, ie no modifications of the brake lines at all?

Yes
Unless on a turbo diesel (i.e. surf) as the brake lines exit the master on the guard side as the turbo is too close, I found out the hard way

the lines are resonably easy just to bend around tho arnt they doug?

Posted: Mon Jun 29, 2009 11:26 pm
by Mr DJ
Gotta be real careful not to kink them as your bending them the opposite way.
IMO better off bending up a new piece of pipe, I don't like "maybe it's ok" with brakes.

As mines the turbo deisel runna, same as a surf also
ah all good info to know in advance thanks guys

this one will fit the standard booster, but all diesel/turbo diesel models have the brake lines on the right, bending brake lines may be too close to the hot turbos

Check your current booster, looks like they have different mounts to bolt to the booster.
My std booster has 4 bolts not 2 so the matching booster may be required.

No you will still have to rebend your lines, pretty easy to do just becareful not to kink them like Dougster said.

got my bracket back today and they dont fit the caliper the bolts do fit has anyone had this problem here pic

is there different suburu calipers you can get

Posted: Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:36 pm
by jaronimo
the top master cylinder is definatley the right master cylinder to get(for a 4runner with a 4bolt booster), Its a 1inch disc to disc bore with residual valves, can also be used with rear drums

http://locktup4x4c.web140.discountasp.n ... c55c1.aspx

pretty darn good,

gee Im hopeing my calipers fit my brackets now, can always redrill anyway right? From what I have been told there is quite a few different calipers out there, the larger rounded steel slider wih the smaller piston apparently is the caliper you need but not sure if the bracket was made to suit that caliper?

Posted: Fri Jul 17, 2009 12:53 pm
by Roctoy
the brackets were originally made to suit the calipers off the FRONT of an L series Subaru wagon.

This is the first time i've heard of there being different L series callipers out there.
