Would it be possible to run an anty-lag setup to keep a bigger turbo on boost? I got a pump built with a 12m piston not to long ago. The pump shop was telling me about a 14m piston they found in the US that should fit a td42 pump. But doing all this would be a wast of time unless you have a mozzi problem!! By the look of every thing said to date, fuel isn't the problem. Getting the air in and having the internals hang in is. So out of all the people running into the 300hp mark, what have they done to the internals? This has been a good thread "minus the slagging" Im very interested in this topic as i am throwing round ideas about motors for a truck i will be starting soon.

STD factory internals will deal with 300Hp. 14mm pumps are being built with great success by the professional people and matched with the correct turbo and intercooler 300Hp is a walk in the park now !

Tell me what part of the country you are in and I will point you in the right direction!

I live in brisbane. If i can build a solid td42, i would prefer that over doing a motor swap.

Not doubting, but seriously? Standard internals...... But ceramic coated to handle the heat? What sort of boost?

Yep STD factory turbo engines will handle 300Hp when the combo is right! There are many factory GU's around with 300 including mine, swaffies own wagon and many others!

Ceramic coating is normally done on rebuilds as another safety margin!

As for boost anything from 30 to 40 depending on what the car is used for an sometimes the extra boost is only use to calm EGT's down when in sustained load conditions ! We ran 42psi in our race truck just to conrol the extra EGT load for long load periods!

Get the right advice the first time from a known reputable 42 tuner with real world experience .

I'll back this info up - although I'm not exactly sure what is done to Swaffies Motore internal wise - but the motor in his wagon is a beast!

We towed a car trailer and buggy home from Brisbane to CQ - sat on speedlimit + everywhere including uphills - passing trucks - never slowed on hills... and got 17L/100... Minimal soot and all drivability - never got hot!

Seriously impressive bit of gear! I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes... but there are a lot of brilliant Diesel Tuners out there now - Swaf is definately one of them.

It is his Daily Driver and it hauls serious arse!

Give him a call but don't tire kick - if you aint serious about getting a serious package there's no point.

Having read threw the excitement of this thread i get the feeling that 500 hp is possible from a td42 so am on the look our for one  :finger: I think stacks will help achieve this....

My fear is that some of those posting drible and trying to baffle with technical bullshite right or wrong or made up are meerly soing such to sell product. While there is some useful info in it 'those' people are basically using outerlimits dribble as a sales tool. They seemingly have endless hours to respond to fourums but when the customer who has an issue ??? no answer phone... is that the people we want on outers?

Beware of the shonky sales dribble and moderators please be aware this is happening and discuss ways to fix. Removal of business names etc as member names? These peoples are leeches on the 4wd community and ruin it for the genuine people. Some horror stories from people on outers in recent times and not just guys i know.

Dammit I thought there was more tech to be had after these last few months... or at least some amusing bitching.
This is getting too touchy feely for me. Someone needs to crack 350rwhp (and show boost and AFRs, lol) because someone else said it couldn't be done. Stop cuddling and go get your hands dirty. Remember WINNING isn't everything, PWNing the competition is.

stacks... lol, yeah twin 5 inch with flappy things with UNIT stars on.

It's pretty obvious when someone is waffling and sticking their nose in to sell stuff.
On the other hand if someone does this for a living I think they should be allowed to drop their business name occasionally in exchange for QUALITY tech advice.
Get back in the shed bitches. :D

You know we are working on it mate. Remember we do the WHOLE package mate , not bolt bits on and hope the pump is up to spec. Its all a calculation and as you know there is a little surprise around the corner.

Im sure we will get the 350RwHp soon when one of us has time to dedicate to it.

At the moment im working on power upgardes for the RD28ETI and then will concentrate on the ZD30.

What are the costs for a 250HP+ TD42?? Is it as simple as the right turbo, intercooler and pump mods or are custom manifolds required as well?

JAmes

You will need
Turbo
Pump
Intercooler
Inlet Manifold
Exhaust manifold at least ported correctly or a DTS style.

Average cost for a basic setup is around 13K . drive in drive out!!!

And this is with a factory turbo engine to start with.

Sheeze that sounds a lot considering the engine is left untouched. Where is all the cost? Turbo will be under $2k new and probably $1200 or less for a good second hand. Prob $500 for a GOOD intercooler (I paid lees than these for my skyline). That leaves $10k for pump and manifold.

$500 MINIMUM for an inlet manifold.
$2500 MINIMUM for a pump, more like $3000. depends what you have to start with.
$150 for a lift pump to push the fuel to the front of the car.
Decent intercooler at least 500, more like 800. Ebay jobbie wont do, been there done that got the melted pistons.
injector service.
machining hours on the turbo (they are far from stock)
hi flow air filter housing lid, none of the nissan ones will flow enough.
air ducting and intercooler piping.
labour to fit.
tuning time.
blowing away a VS maloo at the lights... Priceless.

your skyline intercooler wont be trying to cool over 1000 cfm of air at about 30 psi at half the vehicle speed.

Even a bolt on turbo kit less the machining you would by lucky to get away under $2K if you fitted it yourself.
Turbo $1200 (good luck with a mismatched pos thats designed for a petrol motor, this figure is more likely to be up around $1800)
Oil and water lines + all the fittings ~$300
Dump Pipe to suit $250
New Gasket $25
New intake pipework $100-200
Charge pipework to suit your intercooler $100

Even a decent front mount cooler will set you back minimum $800 without any pipework or fitting! Hell I think even the crappy top mount ones are above 1K?

All the big hp kits I do are around $9K not including any injector or injector pump work. I normally use a water meth kit for the extra fueling if its required instead of a bigger pump, so that only adds another grand or so to the total.

So $13K drive in drive out for 300hp is a pretty fair deal in my books.
Whats the other option? Duramax which will cost $30K+++

I'm not having a go I just want to know the difference between making big power with a petrol V a TD42.

Does a diesel require more CFM to produce the same power as a petrol? Can you not use a a good petrol front mount or turbo (with housing change)? Heaps for sale on ricer forums for next to nothing. People struggle to sell turbos for 1/2 the new price just because they have been bolted up for a dyno run. I bought my Blitz front mount with piping for $200 (retail closer to $1k)

What turbo's are being used for 300hp at the wheels?

Yes diesels need more CFM to produce power than a petrol. How much depends on how efficient your engine is and how hot you want to run the tune.
Petrol intercoolers work fine.
Petrol turbos are usually only suitable for low boost and have an exhaust housing that is too large. Suitable high pressure turbos for diesels are very different to the average ricer units.

Can a person buy their own turbo (not sure what base model is used), get the required machining done and plumb it all up with a good intercooler and then just get the pump mods done to suit?

Is there a big secret to what turbo to use? There are a couple of good turbo shops in melb that can machine up what ever you want using garrett CHRA's pretty cheap!

What are the limits of the standard intake manifold if people just want to upgrade the turbo, pump and intercooler?

Yeah you can buy your own turbo and get it all fitted up etc. Then get a fuel shop to spec up a pump to suit your power .

As for turbo secrets, there are many ways to go about it, but if your not informed i would give your requirements to someone that knows how to spec turbos correctly and let them decide.

STD manifold limts are really around the 200Hp mark as far as saftey goes, the engine will make more BUT it isnt the correct way of doing it.

Garrett don't make many suitable CHRA's to work with. You'll find many people going gaga over the disco potato and other turbos which are completely unsuitable to high boost on a diesel. Most garrett offerings are targetted towards high rpm 2 litre petrol screamers.

Ok but these places will mod them any way you want. What exactly does a good diesel turbo require compared with a petrol? (cant just slap on a gt3071 and wind the boost up?)

I don't own a diesel but am very interested in the tech behind it and i noticed this thread had turned to sh!t and just wanted to get a bit more info b4 its locked.

I understand there are many secrets that have taken a lot of $$$ and appreciate any info provided.

For high boost you're talking large diameter wheels to generate decent tip speed. Low trim numbers to prevent surge and a very strong shaft joining the two. Housing A/R's depend on the final tweaking.
These are the opposite of most petrol turbos which are running small wheels (to minimise lag), larger trim to get big flow in a physically smaller package and larger exhaust housings to maximise high rpm power.

These types of posts are easily taken the wrong way and generally are!
There is no need for people who spend the money and time on performance motors to have the information pulled to bits on a website!
