just a few thaughts. With a centre mounted winch using guides to either end of the car it would be almost impossible for the cable not to run on smoothly and evenly. The cable has the guides directed to the centre of the drum. Generally the cable only winds onto one side and binds if the pull is not directly in front. With the guides in place i reckon that would cure that problem. At least thats what i think!! I could be wrong.

Personally i'd never have a centre mounted winch. I'd prefer dual PTO's. Genuine Toyota PTO's have outputs front and rear. Aftermarket ones such as Thomas only have the output directed towards the front. I''ve seen a landcruiser trayback with front and rear PTO winches. Top idea for a car that drives through a lot of muddy and boggy country.

If you are stuck in a boghole and your only way out is backwards. Who swims under the vehicle to re-route the cable ????????

you can set it up so that there is a hook on either end of the vehicle at all times, no need for swimming under the car or anything....

i agree, theory simple. one winch, can go both ways and don't need to respool. only problem is lever that changes free/spool, and making sure spools on evenly. btw, getting it to spool evenly when winch on front is bloody hard, don't know it would be any worse when winch underneath

On the front you can see it and get someone to help you feed the cable back in .. cant do that under the vehicle

It would be nice, but as i mentioned, never having a winch, not too sure on exactly what needs doing...

i guess he rollers would be a good idea, but after thinking about it a better idea is to front mount...

It could be done but I dont need all the hassle involved, not just yet anyway, may happen eventually though...

Have been looking at this mod for my suzuki since i picked up the winch. The weight benefits of this for a suzuki is huge. The way that the cable spools back onto the drum is still a little bit of a mystery to me.

Does it run unguided to the rear snatch block on the ibex, so that the cable spools neatly on due to the previously wrapped strands of rope?

What issues would arrise if you routed the cable through a DOM tube under the car, with a bend to bring the cable back to the centre of the vehicle in fron of the motor, then out through the front fairlead. The tube would have to be braced to the chassis. Are there any issues from an offcentre winch point?

meldge i did know you had a winch just get a PTO easy and get an elec. one for the back set on the tow bow make a new plate were the 4 bolts go and presto for cables use 3 phase welding cables they also have a plug good for about 500-600 amps enough give me a pm if you are keen for a night run if no takers i putting my stockos back on this weekend

Nigel's truck is the best example of a centre mounted winch for use at both ends.

this set up was built by daddylonglegs (unless nigels son rigged this part of the truck up ?)
