I reckon get a sixty series dan, or maybe even a sixty two, good examples can be had very easily for ten grand and under, with 4lt diesel or petrol, even turbo diesel would be well within your price range. Keep it in the family dude and save some money while your at it.... and then put the money saved into a highmount etc, so we don't see a repeat of stage three

I really thought one of the ROVER boys would have jumped in here!!!
I have a 94 Disco and it hauls the POS (fully loaded with spares and camping gear) as easy as anything!!!
It has power to boot and i can sit on 100-120kph easily, also going to LCMP there is a fairly steep range that it hauls up with no drama.
The Other thing that NO one has mentioned is that the RANGIES are about the only thing that can LEGALLY TOW 3.5 Tonne (or somewhere around there, one of the Rover boys would know the correct figure. They are rated to Tow more than a New F-Truck

).
Mickbj42 towed his rig up from sydney behind his old mans TD5 and said it kept up to the F-Truck no probs (sitting on 140kph).

POS - correct... rated to towing 3.5 tonne. Rover advisor has a 93 Discovery, bored and stroked to 4.2, from a 3.9, running gas, and he has had trailer and car at about 10 tonne gross, and still running strong.
Get a land rover defender dual cab, put 1.5 tonne in the back and another 3.5 in a trailer, there is a 5 tonne payload.
That thing is a beast
With tandems... hire one from the petrol station if your really stuck.
Or yes... go with tradition and buy a 62 series GXL, pick one up for under $15 in top condition, fiding a deisel could be the trick!

I would love a 60

Not too sure how my wife would like one as a daily driver
I am trying to get something a little newer and more 'civilised' - obviously within my budget
Hi-mount is on the Xmas wishlist

Get a LR county look for the isuzu 4L engine or as a second option a V8.
StrangeRover tows the mog 3 blokes, spares and camping gear which all up weighs about 5.6Tonnes and cruises all the way to LCMP no worries.
Ruff reckons they are the best tow rig he as seen/driven.

I think all the Discos are rated at 3500kgs towing too. You can pick up a early to mid nineties Disco V8 for $10000-$15000 or sometime ever less, whack er on gas and your laughing.
Cheap as chips ...

what about buying my VG Valiant V8 Coupe, auto on gas that would make a sweet tow rig and a steal at $7500. You could then have the best of both worlds, a tow rig and a street cruiser, not to be confused with the land cruiser

Does the tow rig HAVE to be 4wd???
Plenty of cars out there that would do it...
Save you a shitload in running costs for when you're not towing too

Yeah, but virtually none that will be rated to tow that sort of load ...

Sorry should have mentioned that from the start
Needs to be 4WD for family camping duties (light offroad)
Also, as RoldIt said 4x4s are rated to tow a bit more. So they should do it a bit easier

i would look into the Rangies or Disco's.
You wont get a TD5 disco for the money you are looking at though.

Another reason for using a 4WD tow rig (besides that towing capacity) is the fact that you need 4WD sometimes to get ya rig to where you want to go!!!
Sams old F-Truck (460 Big block, i think) hauls arse on the hwy towing the mogrover however its 2Wd and when we get to LCMP he often had to unload it due to the dirt hills, where as a 4WD will help in that situation!!
Its a pain in the arse to have to unload on the side of a hill at 11.30 at night and then get ya missus to drive the Tow rig with the trailer threw to the camping sites.
IMO ya mad if you get a 2WD tow rig ( except maybe a NEW f-truck

).

I have been offered an '86 EFI 3.5 Range Rover for next to nothing, I was thinking of buying it as a general town car hack and for the odd bit of towing.. Will it tow my 2000kg truck reasonably comfortably for short distances if need be? say 200k?

How does this sound for a tow rig ?
RANGE ROVER EFI conversion Vogue SE 1990, fuel injected Holden HSV V8 220kW motor with turbo 700 4 speed auto transmission, sunroof, all power options, good condition, $14950

mates sellin a good old Val,
1967 Chrysler Valiant Regal Auto 225 Super slant 6
Very original, new shocks up front, new tyres all round, extractors
81,000 original miles, very tidy inside and showroom condition outside, radio.
Two previous owners. 1st owner 19 years, 2nd owner 16 years, me..18 months
One sold for $8000 a short while ago at a neighbouring town. It was a V8 however but not in as good condition as mine.
Price $4500... will deliver to Melbourne included. registered till April 04
I don't really want to sell it but with three regos to pay plus another two trailers it mounts up and the pension fund does not pay all that much. So if a buyer comes along I will part with it.

that's why we are selling the valiant and the HR Holden. When you have a patrol, Audi, Suzuki, Val and holden it all starts adding up

yeah, but dont expect to be pullin 120.. You need to go steady when towing a fair bit of weight, just try to do the speed limit, or as fast and safe as you can go!
