why is power suppy to a laptop an issue, i run a small 150 watt inverter from the cigarette lighter for my laptop in my truck ,and it runs fine day after day, only thing with inverters is they drain the battery if left on too long while the car is not running, but most have cut off switches before the battery is past useless, between the inverter, and the laptop battery, mine runs sometimes 16 hours a day without a worry.

I have a 12v power adaptor designed for a laptop... steps 12v up to 16v or 18v for the laptop.

Bought it on Ebay from a place called Direct Australia $80-$90 or something...

Just had a quick look but couldn't find it there, works on most late model laptops, adjustable 15 to 21V DC up to 6 Amp / 90W

i got a reducer, from 24v, down through 18,16,14,12,9,5,etc, from dick smiths, so i guess u could get something similar to the item in the last post from there, although, a 150 watt inverter these days is only about $35-40

Because small MSW inverters and laptops don't always get on too well.
The load from the laptop's power supply can cause the inverter to struggle to maintain it's waveform.
This in itself isn't a big issue, as the laptop's power supply is a SMPS and will run on DC, but the inverter will often end up with very short spikes in the supply of many hundreds of volts. These spikes can cause problems with the laptop power supply, and dramatically reduce the life of your laptop's batteries.
Although damage is unlikely, it does happen. A DC-DC converter is just a better option.

Wrong OS but there are Apps available for winblows to do the same thing as tomtom

Do you know what these apps are called?. Are they emulators that allow TT to operate on XP or are they similar programming to TT but designed to run on XP.

There is a PC application called freedrive. You can download it free from here.

You just have to register first. It runs Destinator maps which are freely available on bit torrent sites to download. I run it on my laptop. It works fine. The GUI isn't as user friendly as Tomtom or Destinator but it still does the job.

I just bought a Lilliput in dash LCD touchscreen with FM radio and 4 speaker amp for US$242 off US Ebay though I was just in the states last week to hand carry it home rather than international freight.

I only have 1.5 DIN space in my Jeep so this unit is good as I get to keep a radio

Plan to use an 8gig CF flash for storage but no harddrive. Downside is the speed of the CPU / amount of RAM plus its USB1.1 controller. Will add 802.11 and bluetooth (to my GPS) off a USB hub.

Either Win98 lite or small linux distro (probably DSL) with WINE for oziexplorer.

ATM i'm running a cheap laptop with oziexplorer, vicmap and vic firemaps. $400 with software and maps. And a GPS mouse off ebay for $100.

I'm thinking about getting a smaller screen and plugging it into laptop. I noticed some small keyboards the other day for $15. This might be a better and cheaper alternative to the touchscreen method.

Yeah, saw these too. $15 also.

I was having a think about it and really all you need is a mouse with oziexplorer as a cheaper alternative to touchscreen. One of those flexible keyboards would be handy rolled up in the glovebox for only $15.

Now to hunt down a cheap screen...
