Plastic shims ( as used in construction industry to pack under pre-cast concrete panels or structural steel ) have worked a treat to raise my tray. Multiple tennis balls inserted inside coil springs serve to temporarily up the spring rate. Length of convoluted 75mm hose makes cheap snorkel with built in bends.

Not sure if it fits here, but was taking a lift kit out of a friend's zook in order to get it through rego, and when we undid some of the earth wires I came up with the idea of using a chunk of blue-tac to hold the screws in place on the end of all the wires for quicker and easier reconnecting them later. Saved having to fish around in a parts container for where we'd put the screws and washers, even saved having to go get the screws and washers from wherever we'd put them. Just grab the wire, pull off the blue-tac, and screw the thing back in again.

-carry 5min araldite wherever you go, easily fix up broken tanks on plastic radiators like cruisers etc

-cheap stockings from woolies can keep a water pump moving if a belt brakes

-also good to carry a set of vice grips, if you burst a brake line, squeeze it at the end and cable tie the vice grips up against something out of the way

-car jack under tow bar tongue makes a good bead braker

this stuff is good for hiding rust holes

Image

also silicone your dizzy cap on so it doesn't induce water

and a bit of silicone around the airbox lid will keep the water out too.

also I made a PVC snorkle, cost me about 30 bucks, you need a hacksaw, a 45mm hole saw and drill, one of the thin gal brackets you find with all the plumbing stuff and the pipe and proper glue and primer.

when you drill the hole in the side of the guard, mark out an inch square and drill each corner of the square, that way the hole is the perfect size for the pipe to pass through.

Image
Image
don't have any pics of the top fittings, i used a 45 degree bend to point straight up then a 90 degree bend on top of that to point forwards.

Image
this worked a treat too, I wanted to go through a bog hole out at vinyard one day so i knocked this up, it sat in the bog hole for about 4 or 5 minutes in water that was up to the top of the head lights. wouldn't risk it again tho. a bit of garden hose off the top of the bottle would have been better.

rear lower control arm bushes were flogged out so i unbolted them and the pin in the middle just fell out so i wrapped them in 100mph tape to build up the thickness gave a quick squirt with crc pressed them back in and all good no more flopping around

this will do till i get some new ones anyway

Go to the wreckers......

Buy a tail light assembly from a niss/toy that has a tray.....
( or similar smallish tail light assembly )

Once home cut the orange and red sections off , keep the white reverse section.
( add silicone where needed to seal it up )

Join on 3 metres of electrial wire to the light

add a couple of alligator clips to the other end of the wires

A hook can also be added if desired
( so ya can hang it from somthing and use 2 hands to fix ya pos ) :finger:

Instant 12volt lead light
&
it doubles as a 12volt testlight too

A must have item for when ya wheelin and its night

I've found they are .......
far tougher than the bought lead lights,
provide a better light,
fit into tighter places,
are more compact,
&
they have heaps of spare globes ( ya 4 indicator globes, ya 2 reverse globes that are on d truck allready )
;)

& ...............................

if you add a switch it can also be used for a light in the tent

chimpboy wrote:Solvol is still the best hand cleaner and waaay cheaper than the tubs of goop.

nah.......

a few steelwool soap pads work heaps better
( tip...... keep em in a zip top 'gladbag' )

they also come in handy for cleaning
battery terminals, the paint off of ya radiator when ya have a small hole,
can be used to start a fire if ya dont carry matches or a lighter, etc.....

try doing those jobs with a hand cleaner

Which brings me to ........
V8Patrol wrote:ya radiator when ya have a small hole
A $5 tube of "SILVER" is a must have item for small leaks......

+

A tube of "UNEEDIT" will handle the bigger holes.

also........

a 3" piece of black poly pipe that fits inside ya top/bottom radiator hose and a couple of hose clamps works like magic if ya blow a radiator hose.

&

A 3" long bit of 5/8 copper pipe will do the same for a blown heater hose

;)

junior80 wrote:also silicone your dizzy cap on so it doesn't induce water

NEVER EVER EVER DO THAT

1/
If youve sealed it up well enough it WILL be an absolute bytch to get the cap off........ the cap can BREAK before releasing or will fly off when it does release and then break when it hits some harder object in the enginebay

2/
you'll spend ages getting rid of the silicone so the fawkin cap will go back on !
:bad-words:

3/
Moisture can come into the dizzy cap via the engine too and forms as condensation in the cap, after a while that condensation forms droplets of water that fall down onto .........
yep you guessed it !

now your back to step 1/ :finger:

USE......

VASOLINE Petroleum Jelly

NOT SILICONE
:bad-words:

p/s
Silicone has ACID in it

so it does MORE damage in the long term than you think, .......
if ya dont belive me, go n ask a panel beater what he thinks of fawkwits that use silicone on their cars

Silicone is great for gutters....... & not much more

URATHANE is the go !
( MS1 is the type of urathane you use on VEHICLES )
Ask the panel shop man while ya there :finger:

Jee V8patrol put up alot of good ones

I have one good one if ur going to do a long trip somewere ...

Make all your heater hose longer then normal so if one does get a leak u can cut off the broken part and still have enough to join back up this might work if it splits close to the ends but it may get u out of trouble for the sake of a few extra inchs of heater hose per hose.

Jerry can on the roof with a fuel line down to the carby if your fuel pump has died.

Just start it siphoning before you hook it up to the carby & drive slow to get you home.

but I wont be :D

last one for today..........

Those little plastic bag locks ya find on ya loaf of bread .........
Dont throw em out, instead save em ( you'll need the same number of 'ties' as you have sparkplugs )

with a soldering iron ( or permant marker ) write in a number onto the tie......

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 as required

now clip the tie to the sparkplug lead at the appropriate cylinder.

IE:
Number 1 goes onto number 1 sparkplug lead
Number 2 goes onto number 2 sparkplug lead
Number 3 goes onto number 3 sparkplug lead
Number 4 goes onto number 4 sparkplug lead
Number 5 goes onto number 5 sparkplug lead
etc
etc

Next thing to do is mark the dizzy cap IN THE CORRECT FIRING ORDER with a permant marker ( I took mine down to the jewlers and got him to engrave the numbers into the cap, when I got it back I simply added a bit of 'whiteout' into the engraved numbering so it stands out )

This way leads cant be mixed up nor can their location on the cap be mixed up
Great for when ya rig plays up @ night and ya need to pull leads n plugs off......
Refitting CANT GO WRONG !!

Carry a couple of pieces of 12mm copper pipe about 3-4 inches long & some hose camps you can fix them anywhere they split.

If your doing a long out back trip heres how to make a washing machine!

Grab a 20l container with a lid on it! When your cloths are dirty fill with water and detergent and chuck your cloths in!

All the bumps make it like a washing machine and when you pull up hang them out and bobs your uncle!

keep a pair of jumper leads, coarse sanding paper and a couple of welding rods in the car. If you have to weld sand the area near by the broken weld and connect an earth to the battery and the other earth to the sanded area near the broken weld then connect the active to the battery and the other end to the welding rod and commence welding. Welding surporisingly is low voltage.

Great for off road trailer repairs. No mater how strong th trailer the 4x4 will still more capable "in most cases".

You can also use the polyurethane rollers on boat trailers (they sell for about $8) for lifting your tray ..... or body I guess if you wish :?

If you have a set of those usless supercheap jumper leads, steal your mates set also (he wont mind there shite anyway) and join two leads onto one clamp, i also joined in a 100amp wire out of an old amp setup.
ta da..300amp jumper leads for $20

I had an old sports steering wheel that the 6 bolts that retain the wheel to the boss ratteled loose and flogged out in... short tek screws worked a treat...

If your seat belts are faded and frayed, get a lighter and quickly run up each side, then paint with black(or whatever) vinal paint.

Old tyres make great exhaust mounts (cut strips... dont use the whole thing) :-P

carry a 4m long 30 amp wire with a clip on one end...fixes most electrical problems..

Aut trans fluid is better than injector cleaner for gunked carbs ect (don't know if i'd do this if u run a cat or fuel inj)

Put a few washers under your bonnet hinges to raise the back of the bonnet 20mm or so... will get better engine bay cooling / flow.

those Davies Craig electric water pumps are great for engine conversions
where space is an issue.. grind the front (not the bearing) off your origional water pump and use as is.. they say to remove the impeller, but i didn't and had no problems.. also drill a 5mm hole in your thermostat and you wont need the $150 controller thingo. (at $150 i suppose this isn't really a cheap tip... but easier than remodeling your firewall)

throw some bailing twine in the rig....

a tube of black silicon is great for vacume leaks, leaking window rubbers ect.

hmm... thats all the dodgy crap i can think of at the mo.

If you got a 4cylinder
Get a rubber washing up glove
Cut the finger tips off
Pass a lead through each finger the put the wrist over the dizzy
Seal it up with cableties around the base and each lead

Someone told me yesterday (heresay) that U can now buy, at Bunnings,
an air tank/reciever setup with an airline and guage for $30.00
It suposedly looks like (for want of a better explanation) a medium
size BBQ gas bottle.
Anyone seen what I'm talking about...? If they do exist would they
work on a 4B...?
