but unfortunately the laws would also make it hard for people doing simple mods to their exhaust that will improve it.
as for the tosspots on the harleys that make that much noise then i have no sympathy for them if they get fined. that much noise is excessive and unnesescary in my opinion

I don't think you could. No matter how many times you want to misread what I write.
Cost is a big reason manufacturerers go for LOG style headers, pressed bends, mass manufactured cheap cat's etc.
Go for high flow cats, mandrel bends, extractors, resonators, theres absolutely no reason you cant make an exhaust that beats the OEM system in performance, noise, and emmisions. Just dont cry when the exhaust shop gives you the bill.

I don't think you could. No matter how many times you want to misread what I write.
The main reason people use larger diameter pipes on thier exhaust is its cheaper.
It is cheaper to get an 'okay' larger system, than a spot on smaller piped system, as a lot more manufacturing work would go into installing it.
Instead of getting a mandrel bent, finely tuned 2" system with a muffler with good flow and noise properties, it is cheaper for the rice boys to get a 2.5" or 3" system with press bends and a larger cheaper 'performance' muffler.

I'm sorry, I'm not picking up on what your saying? I never tried comparing a Honda and a Harley... I never even mentioned a Honda? The only thing Honda and Harley share in common is that when you buy one, you pay extra just for the 'name'.
Your out of date bike is on an out of date page too bud, it doens't work .
I don't own a harley, and yes some exhausts on them are too loud, but in my opinion (my taste, its not everyones cup of tea, i get that; so dont have a hissy), they can sound nice.
Anyway I think j-top paj pointed out the biggest flaw with any strict law changes, the effect on business.
So continue to enjoy your argument, because there isn't much constructiveness left here!

Exhaust flows at cruise are a fraction of full power, which is why putting a 3" exhaust on a 1.8L japanese 4 cylinder offers no fuel economy benefit at all.
Don't get me started on those muppets who put an echo chamber on the last 3 inches of their exhaust and claim it's a "performance exhaust".
imo they spend millions to develop a product that is a happy medium, people dont want a noisy car, they dont want to replace engine soocer coz of a more free flowing filter lets some more in, they dont wantto build a 4wd suspension system that is gun offroad as it effects on road to much

For the exhausts you've got emissions (cat converters), noise, backpressure and space. If you want to improve on one from the factory then you'll have to compromise in another.
Traditionally the noise and emissions are the two that go out the door with aftermarket exhausts, but legislation has tightened significantly.
