Seeing your an engineer can you explain why SPUA is so bad.
jim it doesnt take an engineer to see why a spring over flexs up better than spring under..
just have a think about it... im sure you can draw a few diagrams and figure it out for urself..
nice flex out of your truck mick... lovin it..
tyres look so big on those diffs.. love it though..

Im not Jim, or an engineer, just because a particular setup flexes more than another setup doesn't mean its better, I could disconnect one end of my leaf spring and the shocks it would flex a huge amount, but it would be absolutly useless.
I just though as an engineer you could explain why the slightly more(?) flex from a SPOA is better than the flex from every SPUA car.
and again do you of dont you own a sierra?

The reason for the thread.
Exactly, i was just hoping that danman would see my post, and acutally say something sensible, instead of the SHIT that is still pouring out of his mouth.

Just for the record Danman, what field to you have an Engineering Degree in and from what University.

Mate if tutors at uni behaved like this they would be sacked!!!
Some crazy bloody tutorial.
Anyway, I'm an engineering student, and depending on the definition of flex I cannot see for the life of me how SOA will flex more than SUA; Danman what course do I need to take???
Possibility: The front bumpstops on a SUA vehicle hit the axle housings, in a SOA arrangement they might not? (someone with SOA clarify)?. So possibly more uptravel is due to the further distance required to travel to reach the bumpstop. You could achieve this in a SUA format, I can think of at least 2 ways of doing so whilst still using the same springs.
The fact is its still the same spring, and he spring itself will not behave that differently. Extra wheel offset or spacers will increase leverage and apply more force to the springs, overcoming their stiffness better.
Danman if you claim to be the tutor, why the hell dont you answer the question straight, thats what good tutors do. You sound more like a politician, sure you didn't take law at uni instead of engineering???

So whats the point of this?
Are we trying to figure how to fit 31s on a zook
What flexes better
Whos got the biggest penis I mean tyres
Who knows more
Vic vs NSW

Nope, just letting Dan make himself look like a big Pencil after his broad statement that SPUA is crap and that you HAVE to have SPOA on a car to be even thought of as serious.

I think my sig says it all, but anyway...
Danman, as you are an engineer and running the tutorial, please explain the following, feel free to use powerpoint if you wish:
The working limits of spring steel, the SPOA cars I have seen seem to bend/break leaves unless they are bumpstopped to have about the same flex as a SPUA car.
The effect of SPOA on roll centre
The effect of SPOA on COG
How two springs of the same rate and free camber know where the axke is located when it comes to how much flex they have.
I am acutally serious, please consult you textbooks and explain this stuff.
My understanding is that SPOA raises roll centre dramatically for the same overall lift height compared to a SPUA car running say 2" springs and 2" BL. In VIC, we have lots of muddy hillclimbs etc with nasty ruts that need to be hit with momentum. We have found that the combination of higher roll centre and higher COG of SPOA cars makes them less predictable in these conditions.
There is absolutely no difference in effort between building either setup properly, except to say that with SPOA more complex systems are being interfered with so the builder needs a better understanding of engineering and safety to build the car properly.
There is no difference in finished height.
There is no difference in wheel travel once the SPOA car is bumpstopped properly so the springs last.
There is no differnce in the tyre size either setup can run.
The SPOA cars are more suited to NSW conditions because of the type of
obstacles in NSW. Likewise SPUA in VIC.
I am sure that your car could spank me if I was in NSW with my car, and likewise for a SPOA car in victoria. NSW built cars do poorly down here.
I'm not anti SPOA, I AM anti bootyfab and anti people making outrageous claims for their cars.

Oh, that's right, I forgot to read my own Sig.... You don't "know" any of this stuff, it's just stuff you have been told.
You might be better to confine your comments to engineering principles only, rather than specifically about suzukis because what you have been told about them is not important. So fell free to answer my questions on COG, Roll centre and the properties and working ranges of spring steel. this information isn't brand specific, and you shoudl have been told this stuff by a professor or lecturer at Uni so you shoudl be able to answer that with some authority.
Oh and Google "Jeep custom concept vehicle" on Pirate if you want an idea of where this thread is heading.

Or maybe he's the ghost of threads past, scrooge style? This is the kind of crap everyone got over in 2003

high roll center = less body roll = stable
