Semi floater with the hub identical to GQ hubs.

Can't see the old Panhard mount but that could have been cut off when the mods were done.

The shock mounts have been modified.

I'd say early GQ.

Well... what is it???

the brake plumbing is wrong fora GQ, they always join the flex to the hard line on a tag on the axle itself. the hub aint quite identical to GQ, slightly different, which is what made me think Navara 31 spliner.. But the carrier looks way too short to take a 9.25" ring gear.

You are spot on about the brake plumbing. I didn't notice that.

I have never really taken notice of Navara specs. The axle reeks of Nissan though.

What about the handbrake lines going to the rotors?

I thought Patrols, Navara's and Pathies all had handbrake drums on the rear shaft?

I don't think it is from a 4wd at all now. the only factory brackets left on it appear to be those weird mounts pointing forward, they hang way lower than any of the manafacturers would (should?) mount anything like that. they look to dinky to be link mounts also.. swaybar mounts?

I think I know what it is now, just gotta wait for the work ute to come back...

Could is be a Mazda? Bravo or even Ford Courior?

It looks as if it has drums inside the dics where the hand brake cable goes in...

I think it must have been a three link when original, I also rotated the centre and counted the turns for a rough ratio and it gives about 4 and 3/4 to 1 so maybe 4.88, it has the hilux diff in the front which should be 4.88 (82 Lux).... added some pics

Got a close up of the sticker on the rear? And a good one of the rear of the housing centre section?

The factory looking lower link mounts are factory shock mounts i think? These look like mounts on a small nissan table top truck but i dont know why it would have disks.

I still say Pathfinder. There must be some casting marks on either the caliper or the diff centre other than the ones on the axle in one of those pics.

Yep, Ruff is wrong for once, it's Pajero with the trailing arm mounts cut off, banana shaped brackets under axle housing are OME shock mounts, Disc brakes with hand brake in drum and diff filler on left hand side of pumpkin.

Yep had a look under a Pajero today and it is the same, none of the original mounts are cut off just been added to....

Thanks for the help.

So now that I/we know what it is, is it any good eg. strong enough for a beating from a 3.8l V6?

Cheers

From the ARB airlocker chart regarding Pajero rears ...

Pajero, Raider, Front 1991 on IFS, 28 spline 28 All NA5
Montero Rear 1983-86 Small1 differential 30.5 (1.20") 28 All RD05
1987-95 Large2 differential, disc brake 30.5 (1.20") 28 All RD254
Large2 differential, drum brake 30.5 (1.20") 28 All RD464

The guy to ask I guess would be Bitsamissin ... He seems to be the resident Mitsu guru round here ... seem to recall he has busted a few rear axles and diffs as well ..

Frank knows this stuff better than I do, but my understanding is:

99 Pajero would have had 3.5l engine (or 2.8 td), which had a larger and stronger diff than the 3l. The original 3.5 DOHC put out more power than most GM 3.8 V6 (haven't seen figures for a while - what are they now?)

I don't believe there is a diff lock available for the 3.5, nor are ARB planning one (yet.)

There was some discussion about this in the Mitsubishi section recently (shouldn't be hard to find - there isn't a lot of traffic.)

Or you could wait for Frank...

Cheers,

Scott

Did some research today, it looks like its from the 2.8TD model with the bigger diff (10") and should have 4.90:1 gears in it, which also means there is no locker available for it (so the ARB book says)....

well the front I would expect to be 4.88, so if the back is 4.90 it's only a slight difference, I'm not sure that this would cause that much trouble, would it?

Anyways I not certian that these are the ratios yet, will have to pull them down to be sure....
