In my case the Terrano, can not be put into gear without a foot on the brake pedal and the key in the on position, which removes the jumping into gear issue. I don't know if this applies to other auto 4wd, it does in mine and seems to be a std feature in many of the newer models, not just an import like mine which is a 94 model.
i hated that "feature"
also, does your car key ever get stuck in the ignition?

after a hard thrashing, 3 minutes was enough.. normal driving about 30 seconds would be enough..
nice work robbie - thanks mate.

Fortunatly not as yet Nam, though I have left the keys in the ignition one night. Still no probs with the ignition, though the worse that happened was the fuse for the brakes fried itself and i couldn't shift gear or anything, that took close to an hour to figure that incident out. Still back to the post, is running a turbo timer going to cause a issue with the feature these have Nam ?

For a 3 Wire turbo timer, this should work
YMMV if you blow something up its not my problem.
