Want 33's get over it. I did a search for "cowl induction how it works" and got different answers too.

What is cowl induction, and how does it work? TopThe 2nd gen Z's have cowls on their hoods. These are the 2 raised sections near the windshield. WHen cruising, negative pressure is created at the bottom of the windshield, so the cowls suck in some of this air. The air is then routed through a quite small opening in between the layers of the hood to the airbox. A slight performance gain results from this extra air.

How does it work? As you are driving down the highway, the air being displaced by the truck creates a high pressure area right in front of your windshield. This is where the hood gets its supply of cool air. The air is ducted into the top area of where the stock airbox is located. It works perfectly with the AFE stage I, AFE stage II, and a few other aftermarket air cleaners. Is it easy to install? It is a two-three man job to swap hoods on a Super Duty.

Almost every car has a grill at the base of the windscreen doesn't it?
This is where the fresh air comes from when you open your vents..if there was a low pressure (lower than atmospheric.. IE:vacuum) here then wouldn't the air get sucked out of the car?
Obviously this isn't the case.
My vents blow air at me not suck.
Wether the scoop is connected to the engine or not is beside the point. I'm talking about the effect of air pressure.

Wow... i was expecting to get flamed for even thinking of fitting a shonky bonnet scoop as it would look corny - but to get a lecture on pressure differentials, and the theory behind cowl induction, and raised blood pressure was not expected! ! !

THanks for all the input (tho we got a bit off track - damn hot air) and its interesting to see why different people would fit a bonnet scoop, and the benefits or praticality behind using one.

Personally i havent made my mind up - i see how it would not be of much benefit, and how it would have some legal issues assocaited with it all. Refer : http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/1913.asp

But i am still left with a Mustang Scoop in my garage... ebay may be an option!

Drifters just put some washers on the bonnet mounts to push the entire rear of the bonnet up X far, that helps get air out too... You could always just do that so you don't get the ugly look of a scoop

I used to sell kits, to a local "Tuning Shop", that lifted the bonnet (4X H/D Washers and some longer bolts). Goes between the hinge and the bonnet.

Doesnt work with the way the bonnet is mounted on a Sierra but it would work with a Vitara.

But both of them already have vents in the bonnet, off to the sides. pointless mod really.

maybe you could just take the bonnet off !!

40Ëš temps and lots of long slow climbs so just took the bonnet off made a world of difference

Have you got a pressurise dizzy or something in that photo? I know mine hates water (gotta sork that out) but that is going a bit far isn't it

nope didn't have any major dramas after that, it crackled and backfired for a couple of minutes but didn't stall. Water got deeper as well, came in over the doors

can't help but think your fitting accessories for the sake of it. ebay your scoop (or make an ash tray or pot plant out of it) and take that bar off the front. i don't care how cheap it was it was too much. i am confident it would look better without the bar and the scoop.

Mine does that too, sound like a rex for a while till it drys out, seems to drop a cylinder or something at low revs but keep it pinned and it's fine.
