Just for those in the know, regarding the wheel bearings can I just get them pressed off or is there a reason they need to be ground off? Because I don't have a grinder at home and if I take them to work I may as well get the fitters to press them off and the new ones on. Would this be better?

Pressing is always the better option if it can be done, grinding is usually only a last resort or if the right tools are not available.

I have done a few over the years and the backing plate is in the way of pressing them off , or maybe its just my press , so I grind and crack the collar and bearings , but always press the new one's on , Cheers Paul.

dont hit it with a hammer!!
you only need to thread the screws on enough so they will hold and not strip the thread!!
once you've done this
Make sure the Zook is secure in its position
(dont use a jack to hold the weight,,,, use some sturdy stands to sit the car on)
use the drum as a slide hammer with your feet (foot) resting against the springs.
pull the drum back and forth like a slide hammer action.
Yes this is a bit dodgy and kinda unsafe, but even if it does come off the stands your legs wont get crushed ( so long as the diff is still bolted to the car!) plus you dont want to smash your backing plate and bend it!
Mine came out after 3 good bangs.
Car didnt move at all
my 2c
oh yeah the seals!
I know this is a pic of a front diff not a rear BUT the seals look similar and YES you do have to be carefull when sliding the axels back in.
they have a spring on the inside of them and to much pressure in one direction can either damage it or pop it out
(seen it done)
(not on my car.)
plus they arent as plyably - flexy as they look.
another trick that some people do is:
use some locktight gasket goo, The black tar, realy sticky smelly stuff in a little white bottle (usually sold near the gaskets) on the seal before you put it into the diff. This will help it seal and stop it from wanting to spin.
if this seal blows then you will have the same problem as before
oil plus water dosent mix and neither does oil and brake pads!

So you push the seal in with the correct sized socket and in only goes in to that first lip I can see in the pic? And the when sliding the axle in make sure you hold it centred and don't let it rest on the seal?

OK guys and girls. Finally got around to pulling my rear axle apart and everything was pretty messy in there lol. The splines on my axles have just started to twist so I'll have to get some chromo ones soon I think. One question I have though is regarding the little black plastic ring thingy that sits in the axle housing behind the oil seal. Mine is cracked on both sides but I didn't get a new one with the kit so is this a problem? It doesn't look like a terribly important part of the whole lot and I don't think I broke it removing the axle so it would have been like that for some time. If I replace it where can I get one and what is it called?
you can just see the crack in this pic.

Ok it's all done and back together now, not without some drama though. Has anyone else had a heap of trouble getting the brake drum back on over the new pads? One side was easy enough the other I had to go to the extent of filling back some metal on the pads so they sat centered and the brake drum would fit over them centered. What a PITA.
Thanks for the help guys, if this isn't already perhaps it could go in the bible?

Yeah, mine didn't fit either. I had to extend the slots where the handbrake hook goes in. Just drilled them out, then filed them smooth.

Yeah I did that and plenty more lol. But all seems good so far, passes the round the block test and now my handbrake actually works lol.
