i was/am in wagga but am going back today to sydney.
if you can find it free we could share servo's when in each others town.
the big thing is what injector pump your are running. when the paj gets back were gunna risk it as its got a rotary pump on it.
me setup cost me about $400 for my car and only have the odd bit of trouble.

oil lasts for ages, check your cooking oil bottle at home, i have never had oil go off, not even the stuff in the camping box which has been there for ages. you would surely use 1000L before it went off, that only about 8000-10000 km of driving so on average maybe 6 months worth.
1 possible issue might be the used oil? any thoughts? it has other foreign bodies in the oil, these might allow bacteria to grow making it go off so to speak? it would be constantly steralised in the vat when its boiled but what about when its just sitting at home in a tank?
If it did go feral, would this matter? any muck would still get filtered out (maybe need to change filters more regularly to ensure they dont restrict flow) I cant see it losing its energy?

I was running it in my Rocky for a while there. I had a constant supply of used oil coming in, more than I could use, so I got to choose the least contaminated I could.
I used to heat it up, then filter it through some coffee machine filters, then basically pour it straight into the tank. I didnt bother measuring out mixtures, ect. So, I suppose at times, I may have been running close to 80-90% mixture. Being in a warmish climate, I didnt have any real problems with solidification in the tank.
My fuel is triple filtered onboard (2 CAV's then the standard filter) so contaminates didnt get through. Just carried a spare filter for the first CAV. It would clog up occassionally. Unfortunately, my supplies became unavailable, so the experiment ended there.
I think if I was to have continued, I would have fitted a second smaller tank for diesel, and put veggie oil in the main Rocky tank, modified to run engine coolant through piping in the tank to preheat the oil, then did the start up/shut down on diesel- running on oil setup.
There is a discussion forum on Daihatsu Drivers in the UK about running Daihatsus on oil.

Slightly off topic.........sorry, but if veggies oils clean all the crap out of your lines can I dump some in my tank every 20k or so to flush and clean out the fuel system? It may do a better job than my regular "Chemtech" dose.

you get a price?

It seems you can't BUY new oil in bulk. They all want to 'rent' it to you
And as soon as I told them what I wanted it for, it was, "oh, sorry we can't help you, bye" Even though I said I was prepared to organize my own transport for it I just wanted a price
So I rang 6 or 7 other mobs the following day with very similar outcomes. till I got to a fellow in Brisbane, I think. Having learnt from the other calls I left telling him what I wanted it for for as long as I could. Finally told him I wanted to run my car on the stuff and he goes, "oh, well we sell WVO for $7/20L drum
" So if your in brissy, look in the yellow pages (bulk cooking oil is what I searched for). I forget who it was but he was a very helpful guy.
Also found out from him that the cheapest new oil is up past $2/L so its really not worth it. So I'm back to scouting takeaway shops. Will do that tomorrow

there is a bloke in henty that collect oil.
Spoke to him years ago. he may be of help if you can track him down.
As for checking take away joints, Trial and error. i Know of a couple of places in wagga that have good oil, but i doubt theyll part with it as there regular collector will get peeved.
Corn oil seems best, But run what ever you can find thats clean.

$7 for 20L seems pretty good thats like $0.35 per liter. who is this guy and how do i find him!
was this for new, recycled or dirty (used not filtered) oil?
I was searching the web yesterday and there are comercial opperations who sell bulk blended recycled oil/diesel. not much cheaper really, but they were offering to pay per liter of used oil, i think it was $0.35 per liter.
As for take away shops not wanting to piss off normal collecters, they should only care if the company is buying the oil off them, and surely you will continue to collect the oil otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose.

It was WVO - So probably oil straight out of the chip shops more than likely.

I pay $50 for a 200L drum of good quality WVO (as in it hasn't been overused, and its reasonably "clean" WVO). But i'm too scared to use it in my GQ, so it just gets heated, filtered, then stuck in our old SD33 MQ farm truck.
I was originally going to do a full blown biodiesel setup, but the time/cost/effort is not worth it. I'm happy to pay pump price ATM.

coxy, is that from a comercial place or just a fish and chipper?

One of the local fish and chipperies. Greek family, came to the big smoke of Sunny Seymour about two years ago, and i got to know them pretty well (not cause i buy heaps of their food). They already have a contract with a bulk buyer, but they can supply me with one drum every 2-3 weeks off the side.
They use good quality oil, and their shop is SPOTLESS. There's another two fish and chip shops in town that i havent hassled.
Just had a though - has anybody tapped into the fatty goodness of a McDonalds or KFC yet?? I'd imagine KFC would churn through some oil.

Do you run 100% oil, or a blend of oil & diesel?

A little from column A, a little from column B.
Basically whatever is on hand. Given that its so cheap, i'd say its about 95% WVO, moreso to thin it out a bit.

KFC uses HEAPS of oil, i know when i worked there we would go thru about 60-70 litres a night. and this wasnt a huge store... BUT to my knowledge all the stores in hobart had the same mob contracted to collect it... he had a fairly decent sized truck too....
whats the best fish n chip shop in seymor coxy? ill be calling thru there on my way to mudbash and want something abit cheaper than the pub (altho the pub was pretty darn good...)

I know the manager of the local KFC, so i'll have to ask about their oil one day soon.
The best one is The Hot Spot, its just up Station street past the roundabout. Their souvlaki's are fan-bl00dy-tastic, get some greek youghurt and chilli sauce put on it too!!
. Which pub did you go to?? Not too many expensive ones around here. Not too many that i'd go for a feed at either.....

Kfc use palm oil, which is solid at room temperature pretty much, Used to work in distribution ware house here in shitney.

$70 per 44gal drum is a fair price.
If your keen, send me a pm. I have a few here clean and ready to go, or buy my 20l drums fresh, but very clean.
Would be keen to get rid of a drum or 6
Coxy, how do you run it in your MQ farm ute, Just curious as to how it differs from my daily driver set up. PM me if you want to keep a secret, lol

No secrets. Its very basic. The only real thing i had to do was replace rubber fuel lines etc (as you do), and go through a truckload of fuel filters. Sometimes its hard to start cold, but plenty of glowing and a bit of aerosol down the intake gets it going easy enough. There wasn't a whole lot of concern/care for the old girl as its done over 800,000km, and has bugger all compression. I wasn't stressed if it died. Still goes ok for an old banger.

Pretty much the same as mine. Just watch the seals on the lift pump, Mine kept blowing and sucking air.
I run cav filters which are only $5 from a truck joint,

Does anybody run tuned TD42 turbos on biodiesel (ie. running more power than stock TD42T)???

If you can run straight filtered WVO, why do people go the hassle of the whole biodiesel process with methanol mixing etc etc.??
I have a spare 20 acres at home - it would be good to know if I could grow something which would eventually produce enough oil to use and sell some also.......
I have heard of people planting some type of special palm tree which are supposed to produce a LOT of oil..........

To save you hours and f£$king heaps of hours reasearching.
Only inline injector pumps are suitable for longevity of runing WVO. Rotary pumps eventually snap the cranks if not modded . The difference is Inliine use crank oil to lubricate ( also heats) the injector pump and rotary's use the fuel for lubrication. Oil is generally to thick to run through the oil galleries in the pumps.
Indirect engines really only handle WVO well. Leaves very few cars that will run the WVO reliably.
This is why people make there own bio. Then it can be used in any diesel motor.
I can fuel my 160 litre tank in about 10 mins total from raw product to finished product. Im too tight to use pumps so mix it in drums first then pour in to tank.
Bio takes hours and has many safety conecerns mixing it, + the cost.
Mine costs about 18c/litre, bio is around 30-40c/ litre
The tree is palm trees i think. palm oil is only good in the tropics or for preocessing into bio.
And as for growing a crop to make bio ATM takes more than fuel than what is returned. If people crush corn crops to make bio, it will put the price of food up as corn is used for stock feed as well as food.
Its a catch 22 with no winners atm.

Proper biodiesel is cleaner/better in the long run. Burns cleaner, produces more power, more consistant fuel quality.

Agreed, BUt id bet a carton mine makes more torque on WVO, is less responsive though. and when its cold will out do hungry jacks in the smell dept.

The pub opposite Maccas is one of the few i would go to. Nice porterhouse there, bitey pepper sauce too.
WVO exhaust fumes make me hungry. How do you reckon it'd smell if i got the WVO from the jam doughnut man......nah, that'd be straight out cruel. ( coxy pictures his brother Sam sniffing the air while fencing up the paddock, "Can you smell that?", "Nah, what are you on about? I farted before...that it?", "Hhhmm, i swear i can smell jam doughnuts....." [long silence, followed by a rev of the patrol] , Sam jumps up - "Righto. Time for smoko!") Ha ha ha. Sucker.

Picked up my 1st FREE 20L drum of WVO this morning
Now to start experimenting.
Still curios about this fuel pump business, mines a rotary pump. Not knowing how a fuel pump really works and never seeing inside one I can't even begin to think how to mod it.
But, there's an excess fuel return line, running from the injectors, to a hole in the top of the pump. Wouldn't that be dripping fuel down there? Enough to lube it maybe? Or should I look at making more fuel go down this route just in case?
Alternatively, is there an easy way to thin out the oil? Like adding a few liters of metho or kero or something?
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 9:03 pm
by Luxisgood
I could be wrong, and Pongo will no doubt know...
but can't you mix diesel and the oil to help thin it out .. say a 60/40 mix?
