Ya did not forget the oil pump pick up seal between the main block and bearing cap block. I have know people that have left it out as sometimes it is not in the kit.

guess what, our kit actually had 2 of them :D

now that you are good at seals, is there any other that you know of that could be easily forgotten?

in the kit there is also 1 big rubber oring (square wall), about 40mm diameter, 5mm thick and a wall of about 5mm, my brother stripped down the engine and doesnt actually remember seeing that one come out.

Man your lucky. I bought 2 kits and neither of them had that seal, had to go to Toyota and they could not even find it the first time. The other seal sounds like it comes from around the timing cover gear housing. If you are unsure, stick up a pic. If its a square seal it could be the one that goes on the housing that goes on the camshaft. Did you get your injector pump tricked up a bit while it was off. Really makes them engines go.
Have fun. :)

its not an oil seal, its just a round rubber thingo, square walled, around 40mm diameter. i will post up a pic tomorrow.

Are there any known problems with 1HDFT's? I just purchased an 80 with 312000 on the clock... immac condition and really well looked after mechanically, is it worth getting them changed over, what sort of cost?

When you put the new timing belt on, you will think you put the gears on wrong, but actually you need to install it at bottom dead centre...something completely foreign to a petrol motor....
The gotchya with these motors is the harmonic balancer nut torque, it needs to be right, you need to make a balancer holder and a wrench that can do 380nm....if you cant get one, i can....i owe you a favour or two

Hey andrew, do you want Scott and I to come down and swing on the bar to torque it up. Can be done over a carton of Fusion. (Again).

Andrew,

We still havent reached the gears and belt part yet (we're still waiting on the head)... but the 1st thing i did sometime ago was get myself a toyota 1hz/1hdt engine service book (about 400 pages all up) :D :D ... so if something doesnt make sense, a quick look through the book should set us straight. :) if you need it, let me know, its a 33mb pdf file.

btw, the harmonic balancer's bolt needs to be torqued to 362ft-lbs/490nm  how in hell do you hold the harmonic balancer with those sort of torques?

Make a lock to jam in the teeth of the ring gear (on the flywheel), preferrably something that you can bolt onto the back of the motor.

Yeah i just used a pine wedge in the starter hole wedged against the bellhousing worked a treat tourqued mine up one person job helps when you have a F :bad-words: off torque wrench, The one i mangage to get my hands on will pull upto 700Nm

One trick a old mechanic told me to do was lift engine take engine mounts out then lower the engine makes it a bit eaiser to get the top bolts out of the bell housing just sit it gently on the sump on the panhard brace
